My IUD Story

I had the Mirena IUD inserted in December of 2006 at a Planned Parenthood. I had not planned on getting anything as drastic as an IUD, since I had used the Pill on and off since I was 17 and was perfectly comfortable with it. However, the doctor there insisted that my blood pressure was too high for me to be on the Pill, Patch, Ring, or anything which contained hormones. One of my main concerns was that I would gain weight, since the Pill had always made me gain 10-15 pounds. The doctor assured me that since the Mirena didn't have the "bad" hormones, then I wouldn't gain weight. After discussing it with my husband (fiance at the time), I decided to go ahead and get the Mirena IUD.

I was fairly happy with the IUD at first. The insertion part of it wasn't exactly fun, but I didn't have any cramping or bleeding after. I was actually up and about my normal life within a couple of days. I enjoyed the freedom that the IUD gave my husband and I, and was satisfied with my investment thus far. My period even stopped coming, which I thought was great.

However, after a couple of months, I noticed that I had gained weight. I attributed this to the fact that I wasn't exercising. Since I didn't want to be fat for my wedding, my husband and I decided to take walks after work. We started walking a mile or more every day, and also started eating better. I cut red meat out of my diet, tried to limit salt and sweets, and ate vegetarian as much as I could. In the past, I would have easily dropped weight just doing these. However, instead, I gained more weight. My stomach appeared swollen, and my breasts were getting bigger, as if I were pregnant. I was understandably freaked out and bought a pregnancy test, which came out negative.

As my wedding approached I started dress shopping. What should have been a fun time reduced me to tears, since the size I normally wore didn't fit, and I had to go 2 sizes up. Even so, I looked pregnant in my dress. I decided to get more serious about my fitness. I walked/ran more, I completely cut out salt and desserts, and basically ate only vegetables, fruit, and grilled meat. My weight and breast size continued to climb. This is when I began to suspect that the Mirena was the reason I was gaining weight.

After my wedding, I decided to see an OBGYN, and see if she could shed some light. In short, not only was my blood pressure astronomically higher than pre-IUD, I had gained almost 40 pounds. I discussed my experience, and told the doctor that not only had I gained weight, I had also lost my libido. I was rewarded by being told that there was no way that the IUD had made me gain weight. She decided to test my thyroid to see if it was the cause of the weight gain. The test came back as normal, but she decided that the was a "false normal", and that she was going to put me on thyroid medicine anyway. This sounded incredibly stupid, and I felt angry and depressed. I felt like it was my fault, that I wasn't trying hard enough to lose weight. I cried because I felt so ugly and fat. My instinct told me that the Mirena was causing my weight gain, but I wanted to trust the doctor.

The thyroid medicine, as predicted, didn't help me, so I stopped taking it. My husband and I finally joined a gym in November, and I resolved to work much harder at my fitness. I began lifting weights, running, and riding the stability bike for at least 8-11 miles 3-4 times a week. I tried to stay positive and remember that weight loss wouldn't happen right away.

In my case, it hasn't happened at all. As of February, and all my hard work at the gym, I have GAINED 10 pounds. I took yet another pregnancy test (the 3rd or 4th one in a year), which was negative. I unloaded on my general practicioner, and told her every detail of my experience. I was finally told "I believe you. I believe it's the IUD." After a heart to heart with her, and some soul searching, I am having the Mirena removed on Monday.

This has been a hard year and some change. I have had to witness my strong, althletic body go to hell, and have been helpless to stop or reverse the changes. I have stretch marks like a pregnant woman. My breasts are freakishly huge, and my stomach is swollen and hard. I am so ashamed of my body now, I don't want my husband to see me naked, and I have never felt that way before. My once overly healthy libido has been squelched, and it takes me much longer to get aroused. I am depressed, and cry easily, which is unlike me. I have noticed myself lashing out at my husband over stupid matters, and he is a kind, wonderful person who does nothing but make me happy.

I have read story after story like this on the internet, and I only pray that I can return to normal in a timely manner.

I have had my mirena in just over 3 months. I've gained almost 12 lbs, im bloated, constipated, and I'm experiencing hair loss. I actually will be hungry, yet feel bloated and full as if I've already eaten somehow. I've even had a couple of days of back pain with no explanation. My breasts even got a little larger. After reading so many similar stories of women who have had theirs in for a yr or more I know I need mine removed before my symptoms get any worse. Hopefully I can get an appointment within the next week. I believe i have a good dr who will not argue or turn me away like some have mentioned. I cant believe a dr would deny a women her wishes regarding her own body! Thanks to everyone for sharing!

I am not trying to be negative or nasty at all-I am sure you had a lot of trouble on the Mirena gaining that much weight right off the batt is awful!
But when you joined the gym, adjusted your diet etc and noticed you gained 10 pounds-that very well could have been muscle. Muscle weighs more than fat :)
But we are all different and having that IUD removed for you hopefully helped!! :)

I have had my Mirena for 2 years and for the life of me could not figure out the reason for the weight gain. Every doctor told me that a slower metabolism is just part of being my age. ( I am 43) I am eating well and exercising and still gaining weight. I now weight more than I have ever weighed in my life. I have gained 30 pounds. I get the metabolism slowing down some as one get older but this is ridiculous! I have never had a weight problem until now. All your stories have been very helpful and now I know that its not my fault. I am going to call my OBGYN to see how my it costs to remove it.

you can still get pregant on Mirena said...

It is a common mistake for most women taking the Mirena IUD to think it is 100% effective to prevent pregnancy.

However, like any contraceptive, Mirena may fail and thereby lead to an "abnormal form of pregnancy" called ectopic pregnancy. This can be a life-threatening surgical emergency. Hence, the need for women to always go for periodic check up with their gynecologists if they experience funny pregnancy symptoms.

Thank you for sharing your experience with Mirena on this blog.

I have had the iud since last October and I keep getting severly sick. I get. A really sore throat, fever of 103 that I can't get to go down, migranes, and cold sweats. I have been to several doctors and no one can find a cause for it. I'm negative for strep, no bacteria, nothing vital.. I've been sent to an ENT and nothing. Their option is to have my tonsils removed. I have had these symptoms every other month since October 2004. I don't know that it has anything to do with Mirena, but I'm having it removed tomorrow.

I guess 99% of is women have the same or similar problems with the Mirena., I also went up 2 sizes, I also have less desire in sex since I got the mirena And I actually thought It was the frequent starbucks drinks that Are making me gain all the weight, but i'm sure it's the Mirena !

My first IUD I had No issues what so ever, absolutely loved it, was loosing weight, no period, it was perfect. I am 3 years into my 2nd one and am experiencing everything these gals are and more! I hope you continue to love your IUD and you don't go through this, I'm having mine taken out today.

Hi! I have had the iud in for almost a year and for the past couple of months I've had severe headaches, mood swings, cramps when I know it's not time for my period, and fluctuations in my weight. My boobs have gotten bigger and I sometimes feel like I'm pregnant even though I'm not. I also get really depressed, I can either cry all day or get pissed off at my boyfriend for something he says that normally doesn't even bother me. I don't know if this is all from my iud which after reading posts it seems more and more likely that's what it is, I just feel like I'm crazy. I also have no libido at all! I'm 18 and I've been on birthcontrol since I was around 13, could that also come in to play with things?

I read this post about the Mirena Coil with tears in my eyes. Since having this horrible device fitted my health has plumetted and has cotinued to be poor. I also suffered horribly with the Mirena Crash post removal. I now have the chronic condition of Fibromyalgia but have no way of knowing if there is any link between Fibro and the Mirena Coil.I hope that your health has now improved at least?

Got Mirena last July. I had the usual "adjustment period symptoms." I don't have Mirena for birth control...I had it placed due to abnormal periods. Anyway last Sunday as I was getting ready for church I felt what I assumed was some discharge so I went to the restroom and was shocked to see bright red blood. I had completely stopped bleeding and had only been spotting brown old blood once in a while for about the past four months. After checking the Mirena website I decided to go to urgent care just to be sure it hadn't slipped out of place ( I was pretty sure it must have.)

While waiting in urgent care to be seen, I started bleeding much more, similar to the first day of a normal period. When I was called back about two hours later, I stood up from the chair and a huge flood of blood came rushing out. I was scared to death! I bled all the way through the pad I had on as well as through my jeans! I ran to the restroom and tried my best to clean up but I looked like I'd been stabbed and was bleeding out. When I got back into the exam room another flood rushed out as I was sitting down on the exam table. I was asked to provide a urine sample and when I stood back up...another huge flood. Once I got to the restroom I was horrified to see a blood clot about the size of an egg sitting on top of the completely saturated pad. Another clot fell out of me as I was sitting on the toilet trying to deal with the mess. I thought I was dying.

The urgent care doctor did all kinds of blood tests and nothing showed up. He sent me home with progesterone pills to try to stop the bleeding and instructions to see my gynecologist in the next day or 2. In his opinion, the iud was responsible for all of it.

The bleeding did slow down with the meds and I saw my gynecologist the next afternoon. I was sure the iud had slipped or maybe even fallen completely out with all the clots, but an ultrasound showed it exactly where it should have been. However, my gynecologist admitted she'd never had a patient bleed like that with Mirena in place. She wanted to leave it in, and blamed the episode on a cyst on one of my ovaries.

I woke up the next day with another UTI (the 2nd one in 6 months) and I haven't had those in years since I haven't been sexually active in years. Told her nurse I don't want the iud anymore so I have an appointment to remove it next week.

Like others have said, I have also gained weight (7 pounds in the last 2 months while increasing my exercise) and have lower back pain, headaches and bloating. Also had a couple of episodes where I thought I was getting hives because I was so itchy, but without the red marks everywhere. I can't wait to get the Mirena out. NEVER AGAIN!!!!

tmurray8992@gmail.com.......I exhibit and experience symptoms and complications that I've never had before. I had the Mirena inserted in 2007. Shortly afterwards my husband would tell me that he didn't think I was acting like myself with being sleepy, confused and feeling fatigued all the time. I suffered my first seizure on 06/2009 according to my husband because I don't remember anything about it. All I remember was waking up and looking at the EMT's with them asking me have I ever had seizures before while on my way to the hospital. I started having them about every other day. Some was when I will fall out and there was some where I would just sit and stare according to my husband and children. I was referred to a Neurologists. The Neurologist did confirm me with having seizures but could not tell me the reason why even after having numerous tests done. Not knowing what was going I had the second Mirena inserted 05/2012. Since then I've had three car accidents. One on 11/2010, one on 03/2013 and the third on 12/2014 / The physician stop me from driving. I was put on short-term disability with my job for 3 months. When I returned I was still having the seizures, so I was released from my job due to the inability to complete my daily work-related assignments. This caused a huge disruption in my life and especially with my husband children. I am currently taking two high doses of seizure meds. After asking question and researching on the web, I then immediately realized that it was the Mirena that was causing all these complications/side effects I was having. I had it removed 04/2015. That was the best decision I've ever made in my life. Many of the side effect was gone within 12-24 hours. I've had many other side effects from this Mirena also. I've had three lithotripsies in the past nine months because of kidney stone, due to one of the seizure meds I was taking, but then I also saw where this thing can have a huge effect on your bladder and Kidneys. I too like many of you was told by the first 2 Neurologists and Gyn that the Mirena is not likely the cause of my problems and I just simply told them YES IT WAS!!! So I left them and went to another Neurologists who told me that there were some strong correlations that the side effects I was having was due to the Mirena. Then he explained to me the Hormone history of this thing and why I was having the seizures. I've had 4 EEG's and they all came back normal along with several other tests. Last one was done on 01/2015. I've had 2 seizures since I had it removed in 04/2015, but none since October 2015. I was also put into the hospital due to the Mirena causing a significant depletion in my vitamin K levels and several other necessary vitamins/essentials the body runs on. I'll never be able to pay all of the hospital, physician office or ER bills. I wrote the FDA and Erin Brockovich (who is an advocate for women against the Mirena). I received response from both. I always tell others in relations to the Mirena, if you did it, undo it!......and if you are thinking about it, forget it! It is dangerous and Bayer Pharmaceutical knew it!

I had my Mirena inserted August 2014. I immediately bloated and was in constant pain from cramps. Over the next year-plus, I shot up 50 pounds (I could barely gain 10 before that) that were impossible to shake, my bipolar (ultradian) spiraled out of control, I was diagnosed with cystic ovaries, my gut ballooned out like I was pregnant, my tiny A/B breasts shot up to a D cup, I spotted or bled 3 weeks a month, and I noticed a frequent foul odor like rancid vegetables. Oh, and I could barely touch my wife on the days I wasn't in pain because my libido was nonexistent. I could barely crawl out of bed most days, I was so exhausted.

I got it removed as the start of my gender transition yesterday. The bloating and pain immediately subsided, my energy shot up, and the odor is gone. I'm dealing with mini-menopause because of the hormone drop, but I feel so much better! I can tie my own shoes again and wear pants! Once the snow stops, I'm going for a run.

IF YOU READ THIS, NEVER GET A MIRENA. EVER. THOSE THINGS ARE TOXIC. THEY WILL RUIN YOUR LIFE.

Necro Posting this and I'm sorry for that. I just had a Mirena inserted yesterday and I'm VERY concerned now about weight gain. A year and a month ago I was 388lbs, I've lost down to 260 and I've worked so hard on getting rid of the excess weight I'm 100lbs from my goal weight and now I'm terrified this tiny bit of wire and plastic is going to undo all or half or even some of my hard work. We only put it in because that much weight loss in that little time releases ALL OF THE ESTROGEN stored in your fat cells. This caused my girl bits to go nuts and almost bled me to death over 6 months (my uterus kept making and shedding lining so fast it just wouldn't stop also the 6 month wait was because pre-insurance change, NONE of the covered obgyns had openings) Progesterone helped stop it then as everything looked normal on the ultrasound, we went ahead with the Mirena. My weight is going to kill me, if I don't drop the rest of it. (bad knees + a lot of weight + falling = bad, and although I have no obesity related illnesses, I honestly think it's just a matter of time and I've gotten lucky.) I'm still crampy, but it's only been 24 hours, still bleeding as I was on day 2 of my period when it was inserted but it's light, normal blood, not small infant sized clots and the elevator door scene in the shining 24/7 anymore. Supposedly only 5% of users have the weight gain side effects and most find the bleeding tapers to spotting to none at all after a month or two, this doesn't make me feel any less terrified.

Great reference site. I had my IUD for 5 months and had the following symptoms;

~ continuous bloating
~ irregular spotting
~ no interest in sex
~ headaches (I suffered with menstrual monthly migraines prior but these were continuous even if slight)
~ blurred vision
~ irritable / moody / argumentative

Luckily I have a very understanding doctor who does a lot of work with IUD's and initially when I reported the problems she asked me to stick with it but when I returned she listened and immediately made the appointment to remove it.

I felt better in 24 hours and although back to some of the issues I experienced prior (heavy bleeding) I feel so much better.

So glad to be rid of it.

I've had Mirena 10yrs. So that is 2 lots, 1 lasts 5yrs. My reasoning for mirena was I was low in iron, heavy, random periods which went for weeks at a time. My weight is the same. I was an active person when I began and I an still active. I have always been a person who has yoyo in weight.
I don't nor have had an odour, spotting yes, but compared to my weeks long periods, spotting is fine.
I'm about to have my mirena removed nxt week and m seriously thinking of having my third inserted the following week.
I guess it's easy to blame an iud for weight gain, but for me, if I gain weight it's from laziness and excessive eating of junk food.

I've been on 10yrs. 2 lots of 5yrs. I used to have calendar perfect periods. Every 28 days4fay periods. Had children, completely mucked up periods. At 37 I got my first mirena, prior I had periods that lasted weeks and were frequent in between. Low iron also. My periods became spotting. Some days I get red blood for a day, but mainly brownish red spotting. My life with periods before mirena was a nightmare. I couldn't do the pill, depo injections I bleed every day for 3 months!!!
I'm 47 in October, I'm about to have my second mirena removed and a third inserted in 2 weeks time. For me it's worth the horrible periods. The second mirena, I had some idiot woman who honestly had no idea what she was doing. 30mins in the mirena still not in, with 4 injections below! It was worse that giving birth. Make sure you know the person inserting has lots of experiences with mirena. It should take a couple if mins and not really hurt, but I had some idiot! I must say. I'm so nervous to get third, incase I get another idiot! It was so sore, like I said worse than giving birth.... Best of luck

I have had my Mirena 6 months. Right at 6 months I got soar, tender breasts and that's been constant for about 2 weeks now. It feels like when I quit nursing my son and if you touch them they'll pop! I have been having lots of problems lately and until I read this blog I thought that turning 40 SUCKED!!! I got the Mirena inserted 2 days after my 40th bday in early October 2015. A week before thanksgiving I started having excruciating sharp pains in my lower back-hips. I couldn't sit on the floor, bending over was impossible! Two days before Christmas I couldn't take it anymore and went to a doctor they said that it sounded like siatica (sp) nerve pain. Gave me a muscle relaxer and an anti inflamitoy for a couple days and said that's it. Well that really wasn't it it didn't get any better the sharp pain moved outward more concentrating in my hips now. I went back to my primary care provider and she said back surgery, or to loose weight(which is impossible right now as I can't hardly bend over) or to try some alternative medicine first. I have been trying acupuncture and have three sessions of that for the past 3weeks now. It hasn't started helping, but I feel like it is my last resort. I feel HORRIBLE( in pain, tired, drained, frustrated, fat, miserable) every day. I am thinking I am at wits end. I want to be losing weight and enjoying my life, not in pain and struggling to bend over all day long. With this pain comes the fact that I can't stand up straight very long, sit very long, sleep very long, all of everything I do on a daily basis is painful.

My question as I have reading through everyone's posts on here is has anyone experienced this hip/lower back pain? It started with me about exactly 6 weeks after having the mire a inserted. I am unsure if this is related to the Mirena and I know it's probably a stretch, but any insight would be greatly appreciated. I am desparete and miserable not knowing what is going on with my body thinking I can't be like this the rest of my life!

Thanku, Desperate

i have had my IUD for about 6 months and just had it removed this past Friday.
i have had all the same symptoms of:

• bloating in my stomach area (where i've never held weight before)
• feeling pregnant - took so many test and always came up negative
• moody and depressed
• headaches everyday especially when i has to pee - which was all the time. i swear i peed 30 times one day
• i used proactive, so i can't say about acne too much, but my chest broke out a little which was weird for me
• my boobs/nipples are so tender
• i feel lazy/tired all the time
• and i got infections more so than regular.

my OBGYN said it was also "the best" and i am a sensitive girl, but i never thought all these symptoms would happen to me. i felt crazy and no one believed me until i really started doing my research. like most of you said, not having a period and feeling protected from sperm during sex was - but i am done with having my body unnatural.

as of last Friday:
• i haven't been peeing as much
• the headaches have subsided
• i started spotting today (Monday)
• and my mind is at ease

i gained about 15-20 lbs. and have been eating healthy and working out and again no weight loss.
now since the IUD has been removed i am excited to drop the weight and be back to my normal self.

i will update when i see more of a difference.
all the luck ladies and thank you for expressing your stories.
it's nice to be in this together and realize this isn't just in my head

I would be very careful you guys I used to have the I'd and I had it removed because my partner would feel it hurting him when he and I had intercourse and he had told me it felt like it was going inside his willie. Also it is very rare but the I'd can travel and you need to have surgery to get it taken out. Another thing I won't get it again any of them because I hear some drs re-use them, I know my old Dr I went to to get mine got caught doing that and got sued for it but you never know what other dr's do the same shit

Hi,

I am 19 and after having a miscarriage with my boyfriend of 2 years I decided I would go on a more permanent form of contraception. After much discussion with my GP and sexual health nurse I was advised that the mirena coil would be my best option. I specifically asked three questions. 1. will it make me gain weight (I am a personal trainer and basically dedicate my life to my body so weight gain would effect me highly), they said no. 2. will it give me mood swings? ( for obvious reasons after having a miscarriage), again they said no. 3. will it cause my skin to change or worsen? ( after suffering with mild acne as a child and also having problems with a few stretch marks from building muscle in the gym), guess what they said no.

After having the mirena coil fitted I felt fine for the first few weeks. A slight amount of spotting but nothing unbearable. I actually believed I had made the right choice as I didn't have to worry about taking the pill ect. I couldn't have been more wrong. After around a month of having it in, I started to notice my body changing, my legs were getting chunkier (not in a good way), I started developing cellulite around my usually perk bum. I also had it around my tummy area and arms. As time went on this only got worse, I have gained weight - particularly around my arms and hip area which is horrible to look at. I am no longer toned, but flabby and even my parents have noticed this.

Other side effects were worsening also, my acne has returned. Mainly around the chin and jaw area, and specifically on my shoulders?! Deep spots, more like a rash but all over and extremely noticeable. My skin is greasy and oily. My hair is no different, the colour is not a vibrant and my scalp has gone extremely dry which means I now have to use a specific shampoo. Yesterday I noticed in the middle of my thighs purple stretch marks, resembling that of a heavily pregnant woman. I have now booked in for my mirena coil to be removed.

The physical side effects are bad enough. My once toned body is now something I am no longer proud of, my long blonde healthy hair is now always tied up in a tight bun as I am embarrassed of the state it has become. I am now wearing makeup in the day because of my awful skin and covering up my arms and stomach, as I once would have worn crop tops ect, I again am embarrassed. The mirena coil has completely took everything I have worked for with my body and appearance and also my entire confidence is shattered.

This aside, the main reason I want this thing out of me is because of the mental effects. My mood swings have effected my relationship with my boyfriend and friends. I feel, most days, like I cannot get out of bed. I cry at the littlest things and feel as though I have no one and nothing to get up for. My boyfriend is urging me to get this out as since having it in I have gone from a happy-go-lucky type of girl to someone who has no spirit, meaning or personality anymore. I am not exaggerating this, the effects it has had on my temperament is awful.

I am writing this to keep young girls away from having the mirena coil as an easy alternative to the pill. I was clearly lied to about the side effects, which have near enough ruined my life while having it in. I want to know why these are not explained to women before putting this into our bodies. I now have to go through the process of having it out, but frankly I cannot wait!!!

All these posts are so old, it makes me sad that i didnt know about these side effects. That my doctor didnt know about these side effects. That knowing how badly i suffer from depression and anxiety that the mirena could have a negative impact on these.
I have had mirena in for 6 months. At least once a month i get suicidal for a few days, usually around the time of my period. I've never been suicidal except for when i was pregnant. It seems hormones and anti-depressants are a really bad mix for me.
I continuosly ask every doctor i get sent to "could it be the mirena?" but they assure me it isnt because of my history... i actually was put on anti depressants to control my anxiety not depression. So to feel like life isnt worth living and everything is hopeless is so strange to me. I have a beautiful 9 month old, so well behaved and affectionate and for days on end i want nothing to do with him. My husband works away so its not an option, im all he has.
Doctors have me on all different medications now, anti depressants, mood stabilisers, valium to offset all the other side effects and yet nothing is working. I just get worse each month.
Logic tells me it is the mirena. I was on antidepressants for yrs with no problems - perfectly happy. I get pregnant and they start failing as soon as the hormones kick in. I give birth and have a bit of pnd but after the hormones settle i am fine again. 3 months later i get mirena and every 2/3 weeks i want to give up on life and constantly considering checking myself into a mental health facility so someone can do something to stop this despair.
I went to a gp the other day, one who doesnt know me and just said i want it out, take it out now. And he did, right there and then no questions asked (luckily drs are free here but i would have paid anything really. Psych session cost me between $300 - $500 an hour)
Im waiting for it to be the magic cure for everything but i read that im still in for a tough time with the mirena crash. All the side effects are what i have been suffering from so far. Funnoly enough they say the crash isnt dangerous unless you suffer from suicidal thoughts...
Anyway i felt like sharing as the only thing that has helped improve my mood is reading about every one elses problems with mirena and knowing its not just me

Thank god for this post, and for all of you who commented sharing our stories! I feel like I have lost a year of my life! I got the mirena IUD a few months after having my daughter, and about a month after the mood swings started. Moments of absolute rage at my daughter and fiancé. Absolutely no patience for anyone or anything. Feelings of irritability comparable to REALLY bad PMS 24/7. Plus inability to lose weight despite breastfeeding and eating pretty well and exercising, and lately, extreme insomnia! It takes me a good 2-3 hours to fall asleep every night! So I thought it was PPD, I even went to a therapist, who basically attributed all of these things to the stress of being a new parent. Which made sense to me, so I didn't question it. I learned to live with it. I began exercising more, eating a lot better, doing yoga at night, learning to control my temper and know when I needed to pass my daughter off to my fiancé if I was about to lose it. Mind you, my pre baby self was the most calm, patient, happy, and easy going person. I was fun, I did not get angry ever! I never put any of this together or would have EVER suspected the IUD as the culprit, but I was having some irregular bleeding so I thought I should do some more in depth reading to make sure it was normal. All I can say is THANK GOD I was having that bleeding! I can't believe I spent the first year of my daughters life feeing so miserable when I didn't need to. But I am so relieved to know I'm not crazy, and that I am not alone. Thank you thank you thank you. I am going to get this thing out ASAP! Ps I know this is an old pot but I felt I had to comment.

Your symptoms sound like PPD or just exhausted mommy syndrome. I don't know that I'd blame the IUD as much as the battling hormones in your system.

Mine has been in for months now and the odd vinegary smelling discharge did stop after two months, but I still want it out. Sex hurts because of it and always ends in my spotting for two days. ugh. I'm 44, I'm probably not going to get pregnant again, but I'm also still rapidly losing weight, so as last time (I dropped from 388 to 204 in less than 2 years. weight gain hasn't been an issue for me. I was 250 when it went in and am now 204) the speed of my loss caused Estrogen Dominance and almost killed me, they want me to keep it in so the progesterone can counter the estrogen and maybe not cause me to mass produce linings one on top of the other.

I do wish they'd warn you accurately about the issues with this product, before insertion.

Just wanted to say for women who are thinking about getting the mirena now as in 2016, I just like to share from recent experience of having it.. I have had mirena for about a little over two years now and at first I loved it but around in febuary of the beginning of 2016 for months I was feeling harsh and extremely painful cramps as well as sharp pain and was always bleeding I figured maybe it was normal and it would go away and then it never did finally I had to be seen I woke up one morning and I couldn't even sit down without the sharp pains in my pelvic area I rushed to the hospital.. They had to remove it immediately as an emergency opp.. The iud apparently moved so much out of place as in it feel so low in to my cervix and was stuck there which is what was causing so much pain on top of that after having the first one in I went back after a couple weeks like you were suppose to and it moved a little too but she didn't say worry about it it should be ok... After a little less than a year, no it wasn't... So after they removed it the first time I decided well maybe I should try it again I just loved having the freedom of not getting pregnant with my husband again. we had two boys going to be 4 and 3 this upcoming year..after having it inserted again I noticed I was gaining weight out of control and hear I thought well i,did eat a few cookies and a brownie so maybe it's just the junk food I know I didn't believe it at first because it just didn't make sense to me I was 130 and just started gaining weight drastically. I know it's unhealthy but I'm a busy mom never eating and if I do it's something small on the run and it's been that way for awhile so for me to gain weight out of nowhere to having the on the run problem well it's not normal for me.on top of that the sex drive is horrible I thought it was just me too but I'm always never in the mood and I feel like it's breaking the connection with me and my partner and I don't want that we use to make love every day almost and now he lucky if I even feel like playing around and the mood swings on top of the ovarian cyst I get all the time they hurt so bad I didn't know the mirena cause ovarian cyst mine is like, almost every month it surely does suck... I have been breaking out more than usual I never really had acne since 5th/6th grade a pimple hear and there but it's been crazy since I had this back in. I been contemplating for a long time taking it out and finally with the false pregnancies symptoms and test, loss of sex drive, over amount of weight gained, bloated tummy pain, horrible sharp pains and constant ovarian cyst.. I'm just so done and don't with this anymore so if you thinking about getting mirena I hope you do lots of research to see if it's right for you cause I made that mistake my doctor pushed it on me cause my implynon wasn't working for me either they said try this and I read about it but didn't do enough research on it like I should have I thought it would be great.now looking at 186 pounds only after a little less than a year later with decent eating habbits and excerise I shouldn't look and feel this way..I hope this helps Someone else.. Happy New year...good luck

Thank you for this. It inspired to post the chronicle of my experiences with Kyleena too: http://ripthisoutofme.blogspot.com/2017/05/the-first-awful-28-days-of-kyleena-iud.html

Kyleena turned me into a completely different person, I thought I was going crazy, and I'm so glad I'm not the only one!

So i experienced this, but you should know more about pros and consof mirena.

I actually didn’t have my periods stop completely until about a year into it, but they when they came we’re super light and short. I still have cramping from time to time but no bleeding at all! I’m over 3 yrs into having the Mirena.

I am currently on deployment and i wish i had read all these before i got a mirena. it's currently the only form of birth control i have access to and i was only able to go get birth control once in the past six months. so my options were severely limited. I got the iud and instantly was in pain. I cramped so hard for those first three or four days that i was essentially a waste of space at my job. (bedrest isn't exactly a thing here) so i suffered through a month of being out and having those terrible cramps that hurt every time i sat down, walked, ran, or bumped into anything. it always felt like someone was tearing out my uterus. I had suspicions that it was put in wrong or sideways to cause that much pain but when we were able to call a doctor they said pain was normal. about a month or so into having mirena i noticed that none of my bras were fitting anymore. (i was originally a C cup) not even my biggest sportsbras. I got to the point where wearing too-small bras hurt as much as wearing no bra at all, so i would wear two t-shirts or borrow a bra from another female in my unit. I eventually stopped somewhere where i could have access to bras, and bought about 6-7 sportsbras that sort of fit if i wore 2-3 of them at once. this finally brought down the breast pain but they continued to grow for the next two months. my breast pain never went away and i was still experiencing it as well as significant cramps that would sometimes shoot down to my knees or ankles on really bad days. it became hard to sleep at all and the odors were getting hard to hide. It was at this point that my unit medic (who had been with me through all of this) finally thought it was possible i might have an infection of some sort and convinced my command to take me somewhere to get it looked at. When i finally got it looked at it was still seated correctly, but there was definitely an infection and it had been left for waaaaaaaay too long. (this is partly a mirena problem, and partly a me-being-on-deployment problem) but i finally got it removed and was given antibiotics and the pain almost instantly diminished to dull pelvic pain, or almost nothing at all compared to what i had been dealing with. within a week the pain was almost gone completely. It's now been three months since i got mirena removed and my breast size has gone down a little but not much, and not back to what i was. I finally had access to actual cup sizes and was able to figure out that after they had gone down in size I was still a DD, when i was originally a C. I wouldn't recommend mirena to anyone. The side effects are just too crazy for some people. if you do get a mirena, make sure you have access to a doctor to talk to about it, and make sure you go with your gut. you don't have to have a reason to get it out. just tell them to take the damn thing out. it's your body!

I came to this site because im fed up with the weight i am gaining after having mirena inserted in dec of 2014 after having my son october of 2014 i was skinnier than before i had him i was only 120 pounds and i only gained 20 pounds during pregnancy. When i had it inserted over the past 4 years i gained 30 pounds and i never had a problem with weight gain and its all going to my stomach i have a lower belly pooch which i never had before i have worked out dieted etc. And for some reason i cant lose not even one pound im thinking of taking it out in the next couple months and seeing if th e weight will drop off. I love how it stopped my acne and no other side effects besides the weight gain im really thinking that this birth control makes u gain the weight and they never tell you that!!!!!

I got the copper one because there are fewer affects. Things such as heavy periods, spotty and possible rejection. I've had it in for three years now. I've experienced none of the negatives. I refused morena because I cannot be on hormonal birth control. I still get my period, it's quite heavy but I've lost weight, still have a sex drive and do not appear to be in the early stages of pregnancy. And the copper ones are $70.

It’s obvious some patients with HIV are being enslaved to the antiviral and other supplementary Orthodox medicine just to help suppress the virus and not cure it permanently. I have been with the virus for years until I was introduced by a  friend who also narrated her story online on how she was cured of Genital Herpes after using Dr James Herbal Mix Medicine.  I was cured of HIV/AIDS after the usage of strong herbal mix medicine Dr, James prepared for me. All thanks to  Dr James, for healing me. I've seen the great importance of natural herbs and roots and the wonderful work they have done in people's lives. I wonder why people still spend their money on surgery, injections and drugs each time they are sick. Natural herbs can cure all kinds of illness including ALZHEIMER'S DISEASES, Lyme disease, Bipolar, Rosacea,Psoriasis/ Shingles, Lupus, Parkinson's disease, Schizophrenia, Cancer’s, Bladder Cancer, Colorectal Cancer, Breast Cancer, Kidney Cancer, Leukemia, Lung Cancer, Skin Cancer, Uterine Cancer, Prostate Cancer, Fibromyalgia, syndrome Fibrodysplasia, Epilepsy Dupuytren's disease, Diabetes, Celiac disease, Antipathy, Ataxia, Arthritis, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, Adrenocortical carcinoma. Asthma, Allergic diseases. Hiv_ Aids, Herpes, Inflammatory bowel disease, COPD, Diabetes. herpes, Cancer, Vaginal burning, diabetics, asthma, EBV, HIV, hepatitis, Enlargement, etc. I've seen it with my own eyes. I was Cured of HIV and my aunt and her husband were cured of Cancer by  the same Dr James who uses natural herbs and roots extracts to cure different kinds of illness. Even Dr James proved to the whole world countless times that natural herbs can cure all kinds of diseases, and he cured countless people using natural herbs. I know it is hard to believe but am a living testimony. He prepared the herbal mix medicine and sent it to me through SPEED POST COURIER  SERVICES and I took it as he instructed. MORNING AND EVENING FOR 15DAYS, 7days later after the usage of his herbal mix medicine, I went to the hospital to do a checkup, the results came out, and I was NEGATIVE. There is no harm in trying herbs, it will  cure you of any diseases you are suffering from, so why don't you give herbs a try and see its effectiveness. This is an old post but I thought I would add some more recent info. I’ve been on the mirena now for just over a year and boy, the mirena pooch is real! I couldn’t understand what was going on with my body :( was even asked if I was pregnant! I’m gyming harder and eating healthier than I’ve ever done, but not managing to lose any weight. This is also the heaviest I’ve ever been. I can’t seem to pull my belly in- it’s just bulges, disgusting. I’ve also had migraines, so I’ve finally made an appointment to have it taken out in two weeks. After reading these posts, I wish I had an appointment sooner.

Well it is now 2024 and it looks like things still haven't changed. I had the Mirena coil in for a year. I had palpatations, breathlessness, serious weight gain, swollen ankles, sore breasts and armpits, enlarged breasts, swollen tummy (bloatedness) and bad acne. The palpatations being the scariest. Doctors are still gaslighting us and Mirena are still being dishonest and not taking side effects seriously which only tells me one thing. I had it removed 3 days ago after much deliberation and research. I felt instant relief once I got it out. Physically AND mentally. I'm hoping the weight will come off soon . Trust your body. Its tells you when things are not right.
