So You Think Your IUD Is Causing Adverse Affects?

If you are reading this blog, you may already be having suspicions that your IUD is the cause of any negative side effects you are experiencing. Please know that first of all, you are not alone, and you aren't crazy. You know your body better than anyone else, and you know if something is affecting your body in a negative way.

Before you go to a doctor, take the time to sit down and document what is happening, or has happened since you got the IUD. Make comparisons of life before and after the IUD. If you are having weight gain, make sure that you have taken personal responsibility and have changed your eating habits, and that you exercise. Take it from me, even if you are, the doctor is still going to challenge you. If you are doing nothing, the doctor may not take you seriously, and will just tell you to go exercise. In my opinion, this is just going to waste your time, because the exercise isn't going to help. You certainly should be, and it will keep you healthy, but it won't help you lose weight on the Mirena.

After you have documented what has happened to you, be sure to read the small print in BOTH the US and Canadian versions of the Mirena literature. (links listed on the side) I found that the Canadian version of the literature listed side effects NOT included in the US version, many of which I am experiencing. It also states that women with depression or mental issues shouldn't have the Mirena, something the US version omits. If you are having depression post-IUD, you are not doing anything wrong, and you're not crazy. It could very well be your IUD.

Now that you are armed with information, see your OBGYN and present your case. If they don't believe you, then you need to find a doctor who will. Don't let your doctor make you feel crazy or make you feel like a bad person. It is their JOB to listen to you and take you seriously. I finally had to dispense with my OBGYN and rely on my GP. She not only is going to remove my IUD, but she is doing it and listing it as a Pap Smear, so that it's covered by insurance. My OB wouldn't do this, and was going to charge me over $250 for removal. Your doctor should be a trusted ally, NOT an adversary!

My advice? If you are having negative side effects, don't wait the way I did. Get the IUD removed. In my experience, the side effects don't get better, so save yourself the frustration.

Greetings,

Mirena - 2 yrs, 10 months
Post mirena - 7 weeks

Has anyone had any side effects after having the mirena removed? I've had mine out for about a month and a half and I feel crazy. My husband and I are arguing a lot more (we've rarely fought in our 3 year of being together). My doctor put me on Wellbutrin 3 days ago because she said I listed 7 signs of depression. Unlike a lot of other women I did not bleed rigth away, it actually took over 6 weeks for my period to start. When it did it was "normal", from what I can remember it'd been almost 3 years since I'd seen a tinge of blood or had a period. My periods literally stopped COMPLETELY upon insertion. Ever since my 1st period post mirena I have been an emotional wreck - hence the doctor saying I listed 7 signs of depression. I have been very sensitive, very defensive, very insecure and very EMOTIONAL! What is going on with me. I've read A TON of blogs from women that have the mirena and plan on getting it taken out or recently had it out, but I'd like more information/status from women who have had theirs out for a month or more. Will this craziness stop?!

I've had my mirena since Mid-March 2012. It was like flipping a crazy switch. I was 6 weeks postpartum and feeling great. My family life was excellent. No compaints whatsoever. Health was excellent. I felt great and had quickly bonded with the new baby (unlike my first so I was watching closely for warning signs of PPD). Then I haphazardly got Mirena. My friends had it, my OB had it, everyone had it. No complaints from any of them. It didn't hurt when it was inserted. That night the pain started. I felt the strings poking me. I had stinky mucus/bloody discharge for two months. My milk decreased, my sex drive is gone, my hair is thinning at my temples and is nearly balding. When we do have sex I don't know what to expect, he can feel the strings and we have both been poked by them so badly that we have screamed in pain during intercourse. It has made me so uncomfortable with my body that I feel like I don't know myself. Mind and body.

I spoke with my OB and all my friends and was convinced to give it another few months. I work out, I eat better than most people that are even dieting. I only use organic products, I avoid food coloring. These last months I have become physically and verbally abusive. I have suicidal fantasies and sympathize with women in the news that have hurt their children. This isn't all day, some days I feel great aside from the physical symptoms of pain (back, joints, headaches).

I'm excited to have Mirena removed and get my life back. We will be using condoms from now on. I'm not putting any more plastics or chemicals in my body. I will update my experience with an "After Mirena."

Well, I got my Mirena put in February 2011 when I was 25. I unfortunately had a bad reaction to the pill (blood clot, hospital for a week, on blood thinners nearly 2 years) and realized I could not take the pill anymore due to the estrogen. After being off the pill for about 4 months, I decided to look into another option and my gyno recommended Mirena. Initial insertion didn't hurt, but the cramping that came with it was no joke. My gyno said I may have some "slight discomfort" and just take tylenol and I'd be fine. Well first of all, because I was on blood thinners, I couldn't take ibuprofen which sucked because Tylenol doesn't do anything for me. I had horrible keeled over, heating pad, popping Tylenol 3x a day cramps. Awful. I got so used to the cramping though that I couldn't even tell you how long until it finally subsided. Well, I'm here about 2 1/2 years later and I'm ready to get it out. I've noticed many side effects which I didn't really even think of as being side effects because it's so easy to forget you have it in you. I wouldn't say I've gained a ton of weight, but I can say that I can't lose weight. I was doing Weight Watchers and working out at the gym 6x a week for an hour a day at least and my weight didn't change. I also started doing Insanity and again, my weight didn't change (although I noticed more definition). I still to this day get cramps ALL THE TIME! I feel like literally everyday I get cramps. They may not be too severe or painful or last too long, but it's to the point where I have to carry ibuprofen (now that I'm off blood thinners I can take it again thank God!) in my purse at all times just in case they show up. My period is fairly regular as it comes every month, but it can last for 2 days and be done or sometimes it last 5 days and stops and starts again for a day or so. One of my biggest concerns at this point is the fact that my sex drive has decreased...wait, scratch that. It's completely non-existent. I've been with my boyfriend for a year and half and I’ve completely shut him off when it comes to sex. We currently are on a 2 month of no sex span and now the past 2 days I’ve caught him “taking care of things” which was slightly disturbing, but heck if I was being shut out for 2 months, I’d probably do the same. I’m 27 and have zero desire to be with my boyfriend. It’s a horrible feeling and I can’t take it anymore. I spoke with him earlier this evening and basically said I’m calling my gyno in the morning to schedule my appointment to have this removed. I just want to feel normal again and if my one negative is having to use a condom, I think we can handle that.

I had my mirena inserted May 9th, 2008. I'm due to get it out next year, but I am trying to save up the $ to get it out sooner. Please don't get me wrong, I am amongst those who have had MINIMAL problems with it...until my 4 year mark this year. My breasts are getting large and hard 2 weeks a month. It last a total of 4 weeks in a row, 2 wks before my "cycle" and 2 wks after it. The acne started up about a year ago...which I tagged to my mirena since I've never had acne problems. Not even back acne which I'm getting now. I can't attribute the migraines to mirena only because I was diagnosed with them at 17, but have had very few while having the mirena. My skin has become oily, my morning routine of cleansing has added an extra 10 mins of just de-greasing and exfoliating my skin. I do get bloated often, but I haven't experienced this weight gain issue everyone is talking about, altho...I flux between 5 lbs often. I can always tell when I'll have to use the bathroom later...it will feel like a golf ball in my right ovary, as well as when I have to pee. I guess my body doesn't have much room for my bowels or bladder to stretch with the Mirena in there because having to hold it causes contraction like cramping. I am getting the emotional part of it, I have had to remind myself that it's just the Mirena messing with my emotions so I don't look psychotic lol...but all in all. I do recommend it..the no period thing is by far my most fave part of this..I have saved over 800 bucks on feminine supplies. They just need to make this a 3 yr Mirena instead of a 5 year mirena....

Wow....I had my Mirena put in January 2010 and for a while it worked to treat my Adenomyosis. I still got some occasional spotting but was relieved compared to what I was experiencing before the iud. I have been plagued with frequent yeast infections and other vaginal discomfort but figured it was just bad luck. this past week I've had horrible abdominal pain and the doctor found I had a UTI, I took the medication as directed but I'm still in pain. now its a pain somewhere near my left ovary, again I didn't connect it to Mirena until I read this blog. funny enough, looking back I remember a spurt where I had random leg pain too. I'm calling my doctor today to see about having it removed....hoping it takes care of this pain, and now I'm hopeful after reading this that the constant yeast infections and other vaginal irritations will go away too.

Well I guess this explains alot! I have had the Mirena since 8-25-08. I have just loved the fact that I do not have a cycle any longer. The reason I had it put in was because I was hemorrhaging so severely I could not function. I have recently been in the hospital for severe constipation and the feeling that I am 9 months pregnant and have sharp pains in my sides. This pregnant feeling is still going on I have never had a stomach and could always see my hip bones. I work out regularly and eat right. I have gained 10 pounds in the last year and it is all around my midsection I look at least 6 months pregnant. I am so uncomfortable, it feels like my ribs are putting lots of pressure on my swollen stomach it hurts to sit down, drive and I have a hard time standing up straight. I went to emergency with a stomach the size of a 9 month pregnancy. All I want to do is sleep, cry and have an extreme lack of concentration. My mood swings are extreme I can not control the depression to a point where it scares my whole family. I have been having panic attacks and severe anxiety.I find it hard to sleep without being medicated. I have developed skin rashes especially if I go in the sun.If out side in the sun I will sweat uncontrollably like I just jumped in the lake.I also have developed what are being called allergies my face and throat will swell along with my feet. I just feel terrible! When I bring these symptoms to my doctor, which I have been going to at least once a week now, they tell me I am just constipated and are trying different meds for anxiety. I have gone to an allergist and they say maybe I am allergic to tree nuts???....What??? I am making an appointment to have this thing removed!

I gave birth to my first and only child in about 3 years ago and one month later had mirena put in. At that time, I was working in a very important position. I'm not one of those whiny teenagers, I worked in the military since before I was allowed to vote and it required very, very high test scores to get into that field, if that tells you anything. I was in for 10 years and I have 3 college degrees. I am a very level-headed person.
All of a sudden, about a week or two after I had mirena put in, I began feeling horrible. I was diagnosed with PTSD so for several years, I have totally blamed that for my depression/mood swings/anxiety/memory loss/all over insanity. I felt tired, angry, couldn't remember anything, depressed, lost all interest in my family and in activities I once adored, and even became suicidal. At one point, I even attempted suicide which I have never done. I ended up in the ICU for several days, eventually lost my job, we lost our home, separated from my husband, had a huge fight with my mother and I have been coping and rebuilding ever since but the pain and trauma on the inside has never left... I have had to just learn to control the level of my outbursts (which is not really like me before I had my child). After 2-3 years of trying to heal an rebuild, I am finally in a better place with my physical life however, the suicidal thoughts have never gone away, and I have told my doctors which is why I am on strong medications to control my moods when I can't.

Unfortunately, ever since my child was born, I have hated, literally hated my life. I know that PTSD can do horrible things to families but after reading everyones posts, I'm not entirely sure that my PTSD wasn't completely magnified by the mirena.

I feel like I've lost the first 3 years of my childs life, like I have been in a coma for 3 years. God knows I can't remember much of it anyways. Today, I finally made the decision today to have mirena removed. I saw the ob/gyn today and its out and gone. He said it could take me between 6 weeks and six months to begin feeling ok. I hope it doesn't really take that long. During the visit, he actually seemed extremely concerned (I have never been to him before). I am just desperately hoping and praying to God that I can begin to feel like a normal person again (although it has been so long since I have felt "ok" that I don't remember what its like to be happy and not totally exhausted). And if having this gone makes me feel even slightly better, I will never, EVER, EVER touch mirena again.

To every woman on here that shared their story, thank you. And thank you for letting me share my story with you all as well.

I am just so thankful right now that I have found other women that are experiencing the same symptoms as I am. I honestly have never parallelled my significant weight gain, my all time deep depression, my rage, and my clouded world. I have honestly been in a very dark place for over two years. My story started off in March of 2009 when after several months of consistent bleeding I had a partial ablation done. The OB/Gyn that performed it told me that I would not be able to have any children after the procedure was done. My husband and I thought that since our son was 7 we would be ok with that choice. I had my son at the young age of 19 so at 26 I was making a decision to leave my child bearing years behind me. The constant bleeding and hemorraging was too much to handle. After the procedure I bled a very little for just a few days. After that, no period and no problems... so I thought. After three months I began feeling a little off. I was nauseated, and extremely lethargic. I found out that I was 6 weeks pregnant. After the birth of my son I chose to do the IUD after my OB/GYN nurse had talked it up to be so great. Well, I began sleeping away my days and eating like food was on the verge of becoming extinct. After years of being a working mom and now doing the stay at home mom job, I thought it was literally getting to my head. I thought that being home all day was making me eat out of bordem, the bordem was making me sleep, the combonation of both sleeping and eating was making me gain a rediculous amount of weight, and the weight was making me depressed. I was put on an ungodly amount of medicine for depression, bi polar disorder, and anxiety attacks. Being on all the medicine made me even more depressed because just to feel normal I was taking as much medicine as an extremely old person who has several medical problems. One night my oldest son had made a comment about not liking what I made for dinner. I completely lost it. I ran in my bathroom and for the first time I contemplated suicide. I was just done with everything and everyone. Although I came out of that moment, it was definitely a scary one. I never once thought that the mirena could be the culprit. After all, I felt indebted to it for ceasing my horrific periods. Surely this thing that has helped me so much wasn't the cause of creating these demons inside of me. After reading everyones stories I immediately took action and had the device removed. It has been almost a week and although I can point out some lingering side effects, I have not felt this good in a very long time. I have been bleeding, but I will take that over being a miserable person who doesn't have the energy nor the desire to do things with my husband and my kids. With it only being a week and me already seeing improvements that may seem small and frivilous to the average person, these are life changing milestones for me. Getting the IUD was like signing a deal with the devil. Sure it was a dream to not have a period, but I gave up my life for that. The past 2 1/2 years have been a blur. My kids have missed out on having an interactive mother and my husband has missed having his wife. My husband has been quite the trooper. I have had absolutely no desire to have sex since I had the mirena. Before the mirena I was in the mood all the time. My husband was the one who had to push me away and now we maybe only have sex once a month. Well I am happy to announce that for the first time since before I had my youngest, the passion was in the house!!! I am so glad I found this blog and I am so extremely greatful for all of the women who were brave enought to share their stories so honestly. I am so optimistic about my future without the mirena. This optimist has not been optimistic about anything in over two years. So for all my fellow ladies who have burned their contracts with the devil... Cheers to a brighter future to all of us!!

I got my Mirena inserted in January 2008 and I am very pleased to say that I recently got it removed a few weeks ago. The very first feeling I felt when it was removed was freedom. Ever since is was implanted, I could feel it. It gave me a restricted feeling that I can't really describe. I was so happy when it was gone.

But it was more than that. Like a lot of people posting I completely lost my sex drive. When I went to get it removed the nurse practioner ask me when the last time I had sex was and I replied a couple of years. She said "Really?" I just absolutely had no desire for it. At all!

I too got extremely depressed. Before this, I always wondered how people with depression couldn't just realize that their lives were better than others and just "snap out of it." I completely understand now how people with depression can't just snap out of it because I was there. This was not post pardom depression either. I had my girls in October 2007, probably a year before I got depressed. I was fine until then, so I thought it couldn't be post pardom depression because it didn't happen until long after they were born.

I got acne very badly. I started using Proactive which actually made it worse! The acne got better though the longer Mirena was in but it still never went away and I'm in my 30s.

I had a couple of panic attacks too. I have never had them before and these definitely frightened me. I hope I don't ever have any more of those now that the Mirena is out.

I had vaginal discharge all the time. This completely stopped after Mirena was removed. I'm pretty sure it was my body's way of trying to remove the foreign object in my body.

I too put on a lot of weight. I feel more energetic now that the Mirena is out. I hope I can take the weight off.

I read the adverse effects for Mirena before I got it inserted, but all of these side effects at the time occured in less than 5% of women. As I look now, it is higher than that. It is actually probably higher than that since most of our reports go denied by the health care professionals or we are too embarrassed to tell them what is going on in our own bodies.

I have a follow up with my nurse pracitioner in 3 months to see how I am doing with on the pill. I find this very odd since I never had a 3 month follow up when taking the pill before I got pregnant. I'm wondering if she is just checking the ways my life has changed not being on Mirena?

I hope all of you reading this will find hope in that you are not alone and get your Mirena removed ASAP. Or if you are thinking about getting Mirena, please reconsider.

I am damn near crying right now reading this! I have been feeling crappier and crappier since having the Mirena put in almost a year ago. I have an appt next week because I have been experiencing the worst pain EVER! I literally felt paralyzed for 2 days last week. I'm going to call my obgyn tomorrow and let them know that on that day I want this horrible thing out of me! Thank you everyone for posting all of your horror stories... I'm beyond upset at myself for allowing this foreign object in me.

UPDATE:
I posted originally a couple of weeks ago on July 25, 2012 at 5:59pm. Please check back at my story if you want to know all of the details.

Well, today was the day I got mirena removed. I made the decision a couple of weeks ago after suddenly linking all of my side effects to mirena. Long story short, I got a blood clot from the pill and mirena seemed like the only other option. Even after reading some of the horror stories, I took my chance and here I am 2 1/2 years later getting it out. My update is to warn all of you women out there not to listen to your OB/GYN when you say you want to remove mirena because of xyz side effects. I was disgusted and am now changing my gyno because of this. When I went in, she basically asked what my side effects were. Here's what I said: no sex drive, weight gain and/or can't lose weight, always tired, feeling of being bipolar (very up and down for no reason), high anxiety, and major cramping. Other than the cramps, she told me in the sweetest possible lying voice, "I promise you it's not the mirena". She repeated this at least 4 times in the 15 minutes she was with me. I kept asking her what else it could possibly be and she had no answer. After nearly breaking into tears, she said she'd take it out, but that I would HAVE to use some other form of birth control. REALLY? I NEVER WOULD HAVE GUESSED! Unfortunately for me, I don't have much other choice other than paragard or the non-hormonal pill. At this point, my boyfriend and I are going back to condoms and praying for the best. I'd rather risk getting pregnant (with the man I'll be with the rest of my life) than be a depressed, mean, sexless woman. It's been out of me now for just about an hour and I can't explain the relief I feel. Obviously I don't notice any kind of change, but I'm hopeful to get my mind and body back to normal. And I'm sure my boyfriend will be quite happy when I actually get my sex drive back. Oh PS, my gyno also said that taking the mirena out would not change my sex drive at all. Please stick to your guns on YOUR decision to get mirena removed. We can't have over 200 people just on this one blog blaming mirena for horrible things and have our doctors saying mirena isn't the culprit. Listen to yourself and all of us other women. Hopefully in a couple of weeks I'll have another update...a much happier one :)

I had the Mirena IUD inserted in Feb 2012. In March 2012 I was taken off work because of my inability to handle work related stress, then the depression hit. Dr's have tried several medications to get my depression under control. In May 2012 I had a stiff back that progressivly became severe - I have not been able to drive, walk up right, sneeze, laugh or function normally. I had the Mirena removed 3 weeks ago. I believe that the Mirena contributed to the dramatic sudden decline in my mental and physical health.

I had the copper b4 I had the mirena and the side effects were 10x worse, which is y I switched to mirena...needless to say I'm having the mirena removed in 2 days.

I had mirena put in 6/2011 and its 8/2012 and in between these dates it has been hell for me. I really struggled with my decision to even get Mirena after reading the reviews on this very website lol but me and my boyfriend kept having issues with condoms. When I got it installed there was pain and I could feel the iud 'resting' in the left side of my uterus or whatever. I was and am STILL very much aware of this thing in my body. After the doc was done he told me what may happen over the next few weeks like bleeding, or it could come out, don't have sex for a week, feel for strings, blah, blah, blah. Because I was in pain the doc left to get me some tylenol so I could be on my way. I didnt bleed right away thinking i must be one of the lucky ones but after I got dressed I started feeling horrible but didnt give it much thought. The doc came and gave me my meds and I started feeling weak, nauseous to the point where I thought I would puke and I started to get the shakes. I flagged my doc down and he examined me and told me that it was the hormones making me feel this way. So about a week later I started to bleed my normal heavy flow and that lasted 1 week then it stopped for another week and I started my heavy flow again and then it stopped for another week. When I started up again it didnt stop for a full 3 months. During this time my body changed drastically. I dealt with a mild case of acne as a teen a few pimples on my face and back no biggie. Well this go around it was on my face, back, forearms, thighs, even my knees. It was very mild but still!! I was hungry all the time I packed on 20 lbs in a month and I fluxuate 5-10 more lbs every month. I would eat enough for two men in one sitting and 10 mins after I'm done I'm hungry again and its not like i could ignore the hunger paings cuz my stomach would growl like I hadnt eaten all day. My hormones are all over the place, My sex drive just about disappeared. I was at the point where if someone told me I couldnt have sex for the rest of my life I wouldnt shed a single tear about it, my hair started to fall out its really damaged I have the worst split ends Ive ever seen in my life. With all this going on and my constant bleeding I was a mess. I was about to call and set up and appt. for removal when things started to go back to normal I guess. my acne cleared, I wasnt as hungry, my moods were better and the bleeding stopped! I now get my period every 3 or 4 months(my body hasnt fully decided) but when I ovulate its really painful especially when its on the left side.. During the last few months I have had to go to the ER because I woke up one morning, peed and went back to bed and I started cramping so bad(I much rather would have dealt with labor pains) I couldnt stand up straight. I thought maybe I had to use the bathroom again so I waddled to the toilet and my muscles were so balled up I couldnt get the muscle to relax enough to try to pee again. It was painful to sit down. driving to the ER i was very aware of every bump in the road. When they saw me finally the told me it was the onset of pelvic inflammitory disease. I now suffer from high blood pressure which is one of the many, many side effects and that is causing me to have frequent vertigo spells. Im now terrified of driving because my spells are so random. Im dealing with depression, my moodswings are out of control, and I am now experiencing hot flashes. I really am a mess and this is just a pinch of what I am dealing with. I wouldnt wish this crap on my enemies. Its only been a year and some change and I'm trying to stick it out for the whole 5 years but I honestly do not see that happening. If I knew in the beginning what I know now, what I would be going through, I would just suck it up and deal with the condoms. I wish I would have taken the reviews on this website more seriously, as a warning that what I'm dealing with could happen to you too. I am thankful that what I go through isnt half as bad as what others deal with.

Thank you all for your stories. Without them I don't know where I would be. I am one hour post removal and I cried after...the relief of knowing maybe my issues will stop and that I'm not crazy. Started with hair loss, then tingling extremities, then night sweats, headaches, you name it. Been through Spinal Tap, MRI, blood tests like crazy. All normal. If it wasn't for people like you posting on the internet I would've gone on having the doctors think I was crazy. I'm mentally and physically drained. I hope this is the answer. I highly suspect it is.

I've had Mirena for about 9 months. The 1st few months were ok, some mild discomfort. But recently I've experienced Migraine headaches, cramping, depression, anxiety, sleeplessness. I am removing the Mirena next week and can't wait to get back with my life. Hopefully, I will have no long terms effects and my sleeplessness, anxiety and depression will go away immediately. The convenience of Mirena does not outweigh what it does to your body. I am thankful for websites/ blogs to keep us informed about the side effects of the products that are being put out there.

My girlfriend has been on Mirena for about 4 years now. She hasn't had very many side effects but just recently she had started her period. The next thing I know she tells me she is not in love with me anymore. The week before things were perfect and she even got a tattoo of our love symbol on her back. She tells me she doesn't know why she feels this way but she does. I've tried to be understanding but it's hard. She ignores me all the time and breaks down and cries for no reason. Now I've done nothing wrong and the only thing I can come up with for this sudden change is a hormonal inbalance, most likely caused by a decreased hormone drip from the mirena device in her. Is this a logical explanation or not? Just a concerned boyfriend looking for answers.

I originally got Mirena because it seemed like a good idea in general: Didn't have to worry about taking a pill every day (and less chance of accidental pregnancy because of it), Mirena was covered completely by insurance while the pill involved a pretty high co-pay, etc. Everything I heard from my doctors was how most people have no side effects whatsoever, and any side effects that do occur are short-lived and should be gone within 6 months.

Before I got Mirena, I was feeling healthier than I had in a long time. As soon as I got it, I felt crummy--bloated, crampy, constipated, etc. I figured it would go away.

Within a month, I started developing a weird rash on my scalp, almost acne-like. I switched to a medicated shampoo. Then I switched to different hair products altogether. When I started getting rashes and acne on my face and body, I changed detergents, soap, makeup, and facial products and stopped wearing perfume and jewelry. Nothing helped; it got worse and worse.

My asthma and allergies, which had been under great control, started acting up. I was sick and tired all the time. PMS and periods were horrible. I felt like I was pregnant all the time, with sore breasts, indigestion, constipation, fatigue, bloating, weight gain, etc. There would be days when I'd just hurt all over; other times, my legs and ankles would ache like I'd run for miles, even though I'd done practically nothing due to the fatigue. It was hard to concentrate; my head felt "swollen" inside, and I was constantly battling a brain fog which made me irritable and unproductive.

Sex was the last thing on my mind, and because my face and body were broken out everywhere, I didn't want my husband to even look at me. Pain made it harder to sleep. I became irritable, depressed, felt like my body was turning against me. I was constantly uncomfortable at best, and in pain at worst. I couldn't understand the weight gain, as I'd cut out all snacks and ate very reasonable portions. My fingers and feet would swell at times, something that had never happened to me except during my second pregnancy, but I knew I wasn't pregnant because I had no sex life to speak of.

One day, I decided to see if some of the pregnancy-like symptoms could possibly be related to Mirena. To my shock, ALL of the things I was experiencing were described, post after post, page after page, website after website, by women who had used Mirena. Every. Single. Thing. I was so relieved that I wasn't crazy that I cried. The next day, I made an appointment to have Mirena removed.

When I went to the doctor, she of course asked why I wanted to remove the Mirena. I described my symptoms, and she told me that she'd never heard of anyone having side effects like this from Mirena, that she didn't see how it could possibly be causing these things. I explained that I'd done research online and found hundreds, if not thousands, of women who'd experienced these side effects. She insisted on signing me up for a thyroid test, just in case, but removed the Mirena.

It's now been 4 days since my Mirena was removed. The headaches are gone. The brain fog is gone. The bloating is gone. My digestive system is acting normally. I can sleep at night. My breasts are no longer sore. I'm hoping that the rest of the side effects will fade over time as well.

Thank God I found websites like this one, or I would have lost more than just the past year to this horrible device. I don't know why this is still on the market, but you can bet that I'll be telling every woman I know about my experience with it, and what it put me through.

Hello, I want to also share my story now that I finally think I found the answer to my problems. I had the Mirena inserted in January 2012 after my second son was 8 weeks old. Financially we couldn't risk another baby and this seemed to be the best choice for myself and my husband. I have had such bad outbursts and mood swings that I am ashamed to be called a mother or a wife. I bleed about 26 out of 30 days in a month and more if I try to have sex with my husband.

I never thought about my mood issues being part of a side effect. I had been on hormonal birth control until i developed cysts and stopped it to see if that helped. I never had mood swings much less horrid anger issues. I have an appointment with my GP and she has already discussed removal. I am discussing this with my husband tonight and we are working out an option so I can have my life back. I will re post if I remove and there is a change.

I had my mirena inserted over a year ago at first there was no problems what so ever my husband and I were loving life lol but as time went by I've noticed that my period wasn't red it was brown and a nasty odor I thought it was my system cleaning itself out so I douched after that week I didn't have my period but that odor sticked around for some reason I got an std test and everything came back fine except my pap I went in about a month later and they said im in the stages of getting ovarian cancer I'm only 22 my ovaries have been hurting like hell I'm not blaming mirena but I have a feeling it played a major role on that

Incredible! I so wish I would have came to this site a long time ago! I had Mirena inserted in may 2011, six months after the birth of my son. I have gained weight, had no energy, no sex drive, had unbearable pain when I gave in to my husband, been depressed, unhappy, and felt bloated all the time. after hearing a friends story about a lady she knows having an infection so bad it put her in the hospital and them having trouble removing the iud, I decided to remove mine last week.
I had almost immediate relief except my pap results came back abnormal for first time ever. yeast infection and inflammation! I'm now considered high risk and have to go back in.six weeks for a repeat exam.

on top of this, following my gyn appt I have been to my doctor and tested for autoimmune diseases due to joint pain, anxiety, and hands feeling arthritic. still waitingfor diagnosis .

who has time for this when you have children? gotta say, I'm so glad its gone. No more birth control for me ever. the hubby is now in control!

5 years ago i met the women of my dreams. at the age of 14 she became a mother. she experienced manipulating, isolation, degrading, adultery with her ex. well i came in the picture and her life changed according to her family. she had a skin condition on her face from the existing birth control. we went to doctor and was convinced to change to an Mirena IUD.they inserted it. i asked them about it and asked could we feel it and they said no.it pricked my penis and was unbearable.a month later problem developed. she went to doctor and got medicine and i guess cleared up.it was painful afterwords and required healing time. she changed. no more eye contact. no more conversations. distance. no love and everything was wrong like a switch was hit.she went to the doctor.we didn't have sex for a years when this happened. depression set in. the doctors kept running test after test and every time we asked about the IUD and they denied every time that was the problem. then accational sex and a lot of suffering. we went four years like that and the last six months no sex. she sometimes eat like a mouse and done many strict diets to always kept gaining weight.she even exercised and stayed active. finally they removed it. her depression during this time caused her to react and excluded me. we stayed together threw out this time. this thing came out. she wasn't use to me no more. well a man saw her weakness within two days of her getting it removed and made his music. he had one mission. within 3 or 4 days he got into her pants and all of her stress was over. her family has a history or sexual behaviors that lead to these kinds of things. we had it under control. she lives with him now. only one couch and one mattress. she is spending every dollar we earned on him. she abandoned me and her kids and her grand kids that were a part of her life every day. its been a month and a half. i cry while i write this letter. thanks IUD. thanks for given this most beautiful women a new life a great ending. the family that i excepted blames me now for everything. immediately she lost weight and felt better after it was removed. i prayed for 4 years to have one normal sexual encounter again. doctors saw damage inside her. told her it was a great possibility she would have to have a vasectomy. it broke me down like you wouldn't believe. i prayed nonstop for her to heal. we had invested our whole future together with a nice brick home, cars, credit, boats, and so much more. now i am faced with losing everything. her family want to come here but cant. she insist i don't because of this new guy.she is ashamed. they all don't want him around. the only thing i didnt do was not see this earlier to prevent. thanks IUD for me coming home to nobody now and not haven her to talk to except god. she went from wanting a kid and marriage to not.this man used and slept with so many married women and taken advantage of them in past. he took my friends (his stepsister)virginity at the age of 34 and hasn't looked back. i knew her since kidnagarden. the pain was like a bad cramp threw out my whole body.the muscles in my head squeezed my brain painfully. my mouth taste yuck no matter what i do from steady snot and crying. my driven was dangerous to avoid seeing a women. i had to turn my life completely. had to create new goals to keep me sain and prosper. it is a liven hell. but god is helping me. i know i will come back.her depression will come back. she looks of used raggs in just weeks. there is no drugs. doctors gave her medicine. the blame is you know where. i seek better wellness and ultimate joy. i have become closer to god. thank you. be careful women. at first i looked up IUD and it was all glorified until later,to late, i put in the right words.no signification other now. i didn't just love her. she became my purpose. i had to pull away to do better. Thanks!!!!!!!!!

I had my Mirena for just under 5 years and had it removed about a week ago. For the worriers regarding pain: insertion was amazingly painful (I have never had a child, I hear that makes a difference) and removal was like a period cramp; almost nothing, and very quick. It is not violent, it is fast, like getting an ear pierced.

Okay. First problem: I was not fully apprised of the possible side effects of Mirena when the OBGYN and I discussed my options. Had I known the following issues I would not have considered it.

Cysts. For almost a year I got ovarian cysts that would prevent me from going to work, college, or even walking sometimes. I have quite a high pain tolerance and this was beyond uncomfortable.

Infection. I never, and I mean NEVER, got yeast infections. I had several in the first couple of years and was told that soap and shaving my snatch was the cause. Silly, never was a problem the previous 10 years. Also, bacterial infections. Yuck!

Bloating and weight gain. My eating habits didn't change yet I gained almost 2 pants sizes over the four years. I had a full, puffy feeling all the time; even my face got puffy. I drank ginger tea and cranberry to help ease the discomfort but it really didn't help much.

Irregularity. Gross but true. We shall say no more on that topic except that nobody who eats as much whole grain as I do should have this issue.

Painful sex. Not all the time but there were times I declined simply because I knew Mirena was riding low that day and I would bleed and be sore for days if I bumped it.

Acne. 30 years old and I have acne! On my chest, back, neck, face, sometimes my legs! I am a very clean woman! I don't use hair products and I exfoliate daily and use mineral-oil free lotions. What IS THIS?

I kid you not - when I got Mirena out last week I walked out of the office looking 10 pounds lighter. Flat stomach I haven't had in 2 years, face lean again, hands not swollen, the tops of my boots didn't dig in. My mother even commented on the immediate change and she knew nothing of my suspicions that Mirena was the cause. I did not bleed that day. Four days later I had a light period, totally normal; then it stopped after 3 days. Half day of rest, then another little bit of blood. I haven't had a period in over 4 years and was terrified of how much pain I might be in for. Not so - that was a normal one for me. Clockwork. I never had periods at regular intervals before Mirena so I'm curious if I will join the full moon club now. Unlikely, but one can hope. We will see if, and how fast, the zits clear up.

No cysts, no infection, no cramps (other than the normal period type), no bloat, no missed days, no pain during sex, no bleeding other than a normal period. Also, they say Mirena makes you a little wetter down there - nope. That's back to normal too, finally. I never thought to look for hair loss but I will monitor any re-growth.

Please tell people not to get Mirena. And get yours out. There are better ways.

.Here's what I have experienced: First, I bled for 3 months after I had it in..then came the Weight gain, approx 20 lbs and I too am constantly in the gym, always have been approx 130-135lbs at 5'6" and after having 3 children. I eat extremely well, and the only time I wore a D cup was when I was nursing, not since Mirena! My breasts are so sore at least 2 weeks of the month it feels like I am nursing a village of babies! My husband doesn't get to enjoy them because if he so much as looks at them I rip his head off! Which brings me to my next issue, mood swings. the word "irritibility" does not do justice for what happens to me. I have physically attacked my husband, screamed at my children, almost heaved a co-worker out of a window(which put me into the mental health dr)to which I was asked if I felt suicidal. They asked me if I was "opposed to medication" I started to cry. I told my NP, my Dr, and the Social Worker that I felt that something was physically WRONG. I told them that I felt like I could peel the skin from face and pull out my teeth, like every nerve ending was in open air. I have zero patience, and even common sense has no place when I am "having an episode". They gave me sleeping pills and told me to go to therapy. Oh, then there's the painful bloating and cramping. Mine feels like one solid ball that is just constantly bloated, I may wake up in the morning and feel pretty good about myself, but I will have a cup of coffee and I can hardly do up up my pants. My face is swollen, my belly is swollen, my ovaries feel like they are being twisted out and I started having cysts burst(Well thats what they told me was happening, nobody ran tests, they just said its probably that cuz its fairly common)I have constant spotting, I might be lucky and go two weeks with no spotting and then it will start, it may last a day or 3 or 2 weeks.. After having the MIrena for a year, out of the blue, I was sitting at my desk one day when the floodgates of hell opened up, and I bled for 3 weeks. I had a 2 week break and bled some more. I have had a period monthly since January, so I really don't understand how all these women aren't having their periods? Mine never really went away. I refused the Depo shot because of the side effects and my NP told me it was not the same hormones as the Mirena. She also told me at my PAP test in August that the Mirena is so excellent that I wont have cervical cancer! She must have a crystal ball. I feel embarrased by my behavior, and angry and I pray that I have not damaged relationships throughout these past few years. Long story short, I pulled it out myself, tonight. An hour ago. I read all the articles this time, and I live down the street from a hospital and I have free health care. I tried sitting on the toilet, squatting, laying on my back...laying on my side with knee up did the trick! Within seconds it was out, I didnt even realize I had the strings in my fingers!! It was amazing. Thank you Ladies for your honesty, I read some of your stories to hubby and asked what he thought and his response? They sound like you...how's THAT for a good indication its not just in MY head? I guess I will be buying stocks in the today sponge?? Unless you Ladies can suggest something better...I just want/need to give my body a break already, she's had a rough go the past two years

Ive had the IUD in for 5 years scheduled to get it out in two days.
I wish I had known about these side effects my moods where so bad that my son moved out of the house and was afraid to give me more then a few hours notice. My Daughter ran away all because I used to fight all the time with my husband. Everything he and everyone else did would drive me crazy. I have had constant anxiety attacks mood swings that ranged from homicidal to suicidal. Lucky for everyone and myself I have a very strong belief in God. I also have been trying to lose weight for the past 5 years I reduced my self to eating only salads and soups but still can't get rid of the any weight.I also exercise everyday. I also have to force myself to do things, I still have my two younger kids at home and so many times I have cancelled things we were going to do just because I had zero energy. Forget about sex drive I have to force myself to have sex I feel so sorry for my husband. After reading all of these posts I am praying that I will finally get back to the happy and loving wife I was 5 years ago.
Thank you everyone you have givin me hope.

My name is Joslynne and this is my IUD nightmare. I have always had irregular periods so I wanted to get birth control to help regulate my menstrual cycles. because I am fatherly forgetful I knew taking a pill every day or having set times I had to do things wasn't going to work for me, so I got an IUD in June so I wouldn't have to remember any schedules. this was the biggest mistake. I bled for almost two months and had constant headaches and cramps. when I spoke with my doctor she said it was perfectly normal and my body just needed time to adjust. a few days later I stopped bleeding and I thought that my body had finally accepted my IUD and everything would be ok. as the weeks went by my boyfriend and roommate started complaining about how my hair was all over the house. I didn't think anything of it because my hair has always shreded at random times. it wasn't untell I went to my stylist for the routine hair trim that I realized the extent of.my "shedding". She had found a bald spot the size of 50 cent coin. I was mortified and completely embarrassed. she consulted.me to visit a doctor, however I figured it was due to the fact that I had been wearing my pony tale in the same spot for the past 8 months due to my job. so I startedearing my ponytail higher up on m head and figured that my hair loss would stop. but unfortunately my hair was still all over the house, I was clogging our drain every time I showered and my brush was always full of hair. I had my boyfriend look at my bald spot and within a matter of weeks the spot had increased toothed size of.my palm, and not only that but I had another spot developing. I cried myself to sleep that night. at the age of 18 I was starting to go bald. I scheduled an appointment with a dermatologist and they told me it was due to stress, however I wasn't stressed, I had a great job, a new car, a healthy relationship, friends.. life was good. when I told them I didn't think it was due to stress the doctor argued with me saying not all stress is negative. they put me on steroids to encourage hair growth but did nothing to stop the hair loss. the serious did nothing but make me angry. a mo.th later I went in for a fallow up appointmen, the doctor still refused to consider the fact that it might be something else besides stress and gave me steroid shots into my scalp. it was extremely painful and mademy head itch. once again this did absolutely nothing. my hair was still falling out in clumps. it was mainly in the shower. after every shower I'd cry and cry and cry. it got to the point where I didn't want to wash my hair anymore. it seemed like everything I did wash it I had a new bald patch. at first it was bearable because my hair was so thick it covered all the patches, but soon the patces started to form ontop of my head as well making it impossible to wear my hair down without them showing. my boyfriend started becoming concerned because I fell into a depression. he researched the IUD and found that it causes hair loss in 1 out of 10 women. I had my IUD removed the very next day. I'm a month free of my IUD now however my hair continues to fall out. I have been taking hair regrowth supplementshowever my hair refuses to start regrowing. I went to my regular doctor and had blood work done to see if my hormones were off, once again this was no help. my doctor said they were perfectly fine and insisted it was stress as well. she treated me like I was crazy and had no idea what I was talking about. I once again ended up balling my eyes out, I was hoping my blood work would reveal the problem and that I could start my healing, and it ended up being yet anoth disappointment. I don't know if my hair will continue to fall out or if it will ever regrow but I wanted to share.my story in hopes that someone who has had the same side effect that I'm having may give me hope. tips or help me accept the fact that at the age of 19 I May become completely bald.

I am nearly 21, have had my mirena for over a year and a half now, it has had its positives, like not getting pregnant, but I'd rather be pregnant forever than have this evil thing in me for another day. I'm too young to feel the way I do. My hair won't grow, my acne is bad, my husband and I can't have sex in some of our old favorite positions because it causes me to much pain. Those are the least of my issues with this thing. I have bad memory, I used to be happy and energetic all the time, now I'm always exhausted and am depressed (never had issues with depression before) my husband tells me I'm not the same person I used to be and that makes me feel terrible, I used to be up for anything and now its a constant struggle to feel up to leaving the house, even to take out the trash or get the mail. I gained 40 pounds, lost 20, but am still struggling with to lose more. I have constant mood swings, I'm in a constant brain fuzz and almost always feel confused. I have severe body aches and cramps, an always irritable, and have hot flashes. My periods are irregular and my campus are worse than before, my doctor and I thought I had kidney stones at one point, the extra strength vicodin he prescribed me for it hardly helped, and for the first time ever, I had uti's. Finally convinced my doctor to make an appointment to get it removed (we want another baby). I'm so excited to be myself again, not going to get the mirena again, I'm glad I'm not the only one who hates this thing and has not very helpful doctors. I was attracted to it for the low dose of hormones and the convenience, but it was not worth it.

So I want to yank this thing out myself, but I had the strings trimmed because they were hurting my husband, would I still be able to get it out or is a doctor highly reccomended, my insurance won't cover for non health issues and I don't have $204 to spend on a doctor to simply pull it out. I'm sure my bad experience with it (read above) could constitute as a health issue, uti's and feelings of kidney stones and weight gain would qualify I'm sure, I just don't want to wait a month...emails would be helpful too codybrookehanson@gmail.com thanks ladies

I too had Mirena from January 2011 to April 2012. I had many of the symptoms described. Hair loss, anxiety, depression weight gain,HBP, & insomnia.Oh and crazy night sweats 2 days after removal. Had the crash in June of this year, don't know how I managed to survive 2 weeks of hell. I was slowly recovering After August. I was happy & grateful to God that I was getting my life & health back. One week before my 5th period post Mirena (Oct 31) my insomnia returns with minor anxiety. My therapist which I saw today thinks it's all in my head. She said I should stop reading these forums.I was a happy normal person before Mirena, now all of a sudden I'm imagining things. Been to 3 Obgyn's since removal, including the one that removed it. All have insisted Mirena couldn't be the cause of the symptoms. My regular Obgyn who saw me through the birth of my 3 children told me that Mirena's synthetic hormone couldn't leave the uterus. The second Obgyn said I needed a shrink. My last Obgyn said I could have had possible side affects but they should have been gone once I had it removed. Why don't doctors believe??? We can't all be hysterical woman making up symptoms.
I am venting I know but it's 5:01 a.m., been awake since 2:30 am. with no sign of sleep. I been out since Wednesday from work, I wonder if I will be OK by next Tuesday to return. I'm desperate for relief. Who do I turn to for help? The medical community thinks either your depressed & the quick answer is ant-depressants or see a shrink because of you mental problems. This is a crazy nightmare. I pray & sympathize to all the Mirena victims.

I have had the discharge, hair loss, a hair growth and acne as well. I went to the doctor to get it removed and I was told my symptoms had nothing to do with the iud. Shortly after I went back to get it removed and was charged 269.00. I've had it out now for a year and I still have the discharge and acne along with two coarse black hairs on my neck and chest. Thanks ladies for sharing your stories.

i got the IUD 10-2-2010. at first it was okay, but after a few months it became a nightmare. I went from a happy person to a miserable person. my boyfriend started to believe that i was cheating because we would have sex all the time to no sex at all. periods would last for almost a month not to mention the horrible cramps.I really dont recommend the mirena at all

I had this lUD from 2007 to 2010 and had no issues. Every great thing they say about it was true. Now after having my second child I thought the Iud was a no brainer. This time has been horrible. I had it put in July 2011 and had nonstop bleeding until Jan. Then it stopped, yeah. Well I thought. I went a few months with nothing then bam, bleeding for two to three weeks straight. Sometimes very heavy others light. That hasn't stopped. Now I bleed everyday for weeks. Sex what is that. I never ever want to do it and if I do it makes me bleed. Mood swings are crazy. I go from 0 to psycho in a second. My children and husband really pay the price. I did mention to Dr about bleeding issues was told that can be normal. I hate this and want it out. I am calling Dr asap. Even my husband is telling me to get it out. I don't see how its safe.

Ladies, I'm very saddened that so many of you suffered for years and were largely ignored and over prescribed more meds. As a midwife I teach over and over for women to trust their body. After getting my mirena 1 month ago I've been increasingly moody and teary. My sex drive while in my sexual peak...I'm 32 is at a zero. I've gotten acne that I've never had. Acne that leaves scars on the underside of my jawbone/chin. I work out 2-3 a week yoga and running. My 122 pounds that doesn't fluctuate ever....has gone out of control for no reason. I've gained 7 pounds in 30 days...growing me right out of all of my jeans. I feel bloated all the time my ass has doubled in size. I can feel a pressure all the time deep inside. So......after listening to my body and reading these testimonials I reached right up and pulled the culprit right out!!! No discomfort or bleeding. And ya know what??? I felt better immediately. I feel much happier today already and that pressure inside is gone and believe it or not I already feel less bloated. Thank you for sharing your stories and encouraging women :)

Like everyone else here...I say WOW! I am 52 years old and still having periods at this age I do know myself pretty well. BUT, I too have been having acne, terrible lower back pains, lack of sex drive all of the sudden weight gain AND depression! As I sat here and read all these stories I am saddened to think I need to have the IUD removed but happy to hear that all these things I am going through can very possibley end soon. Thank you for setting up this blog and for all the stories. Good luck to all the women out there.

WOW. i did light research before having mirena inserted back in jan 2010 and read some negative comments as well as good reviews. i decided to go for it hoping i would be ok.

almost two years later, i am just now realizing mirena is 100% the cause of my nightmare existence. my biggest problem with it, mental illness agitation.

i have suffered with bipolar disorder and PTSD my entire adult life, i'm almost 38. before mirena i was totally stable and properly medicated. i also practice cognitive therapy on myself having been in the system for nearly 20 years.

AFTER MIRENA INSERTION
i was diagnosed with post partum depression when my son was 6 months old. normal enough, after all i have mental illnesses. however, the past year and 1/2 has been a total mental nightmare. about 6 months ago i was diagnosed with psychotic major depressive disorder! since mirena my symptoms include; rage, hostility, depression, sever anxiety, self-destructive behavior, lack of empathy, breakdowns, suicidal thoughts, believing someone is trying to kill me, severe paranoia, the list goes on. luckily i have a loving and patient husband who has been trying to help me figure out why. i've been in therapy again with no relief. i can't seem to fix it no matter what i do, which is unlike me.

i just called my OB to schedule an appointment to have it removed and the front desk transferred me to his nurse. i left her a message and challenged the front desk transferring me instead of booking an appointment like i requested. i will have this device removed and soon! if my OB wants to challenge me, i will take my crazy butt elsewhere! i've been with him since i was a teen but this is just plain wrong like so many drugs they push. i pray he listens and cooperates. I PRAY FOR MY SANITY TO RETURN AFTER IT IS OUT OF MY BODY.

THANK YOU LADIES for all of your stories. i have a little hope now. this device robbed me of 2 precious years where i've neglected my family and friends, some of which have turned their backs to me as i have become intolerable.

I am a 29 yr old mother of 1. I had Mirena put in April of this yr 2012 because I was hospitalized for DVT and Pulmonary Embolisms in my right lung had 2 big pieces in 2different tracheals. It (the Mirena) was a simple procedure that went quick but I had instant crampimg and spotting, I was on the pill before all of this but to take you back to why I ended up on the pill I had been bleeding for almost 5 months straight and I had a procedure done in the ER and was treated like i was some nasty person. I finally was able to get in to my FD and was told the pill would help me.. lie.... I spent 5 days in the hospital and had specialist come in and talk to me why they thought what they thought and gave me the option to wait for the cure of days going by I could get a HYSTERECTOMY or MIRENA that could stop my bleeding or slow it up a lot. I was nervous but I chose the Mirena. Like I stated Im only 29 with one child I would like to have one more baby. My daughter is 5 and she is in Kindergarden I have lost all patients helping with homework, fussing more, punishing her, just being mean. I cry because this is not me I love this little girl of mines with all my heart and soul. I have depression spells, upset for no reason, lost tons of friends, lost my Fiance because I have been changing so much. Most of all lost my job that I loved, feeling pregnant, sick to my stomach more often then ever when I was pregnant I felt great and happy. More acne then ever sinus and allergies are thee worst ever I never had them this bad ever MIGRAINES are frequent. Is it safe to say I am scared but for the safety of my Blood clot situation I want to live. I feel that this MIrena may not be needed after I was still bleeding after it was placed in my uterus to find out I had a huge Kidney Stone in my kidney. The reason for my consistant bleeding. WHERE DO THEY GET SOME OF THESE SPECIALIST FROM???????? I PLAN TO GET THIS TAKEN OUT AS SOON AS APRIL 17 ARRIVES I GAVEIT 1 YEAR. My family and the frends I have left are worried about me I sit in the house all day and sleep mainly im in the dark like now just a lil day light shining in .. smh... I cant even lose weight anymore i barely eat and when I do t decently healthy.. THIS THING IS EVIL.. I PRAY FOR US ALL

I have had Mirena for about a year now and have been very fortunate. All the symptoms of loss of sex drive, weight gain, and mood swings I experienced during my five years on the pill. Within a month of being on Mirena I was a changed person. This may be because I was on a fairly high dose on the pill. Yes I spotted for a few months, three months in I had a bout of acne on my chest and neck (places where I had never had it), and my partner complained a couple of times about feeling the strings, especially in certain positions. Like I said I haven't had any serious side affects and truly have never been happier, but these comments have made me more aware of things to watch out for the 4 yrs

I have had all of the same problems you hat to a T. The doc. couldn't get me in soon enough so I took it out mysel! No pain at all and I feel better alread!

I apologize if any of this is TMI, but I want to let people know who may be having the same problems.

Four years ago, my gyno recommended Mirena to help my endometriosis. Getting it put in was excruciating. Shortly after that, I started to gain weight. Fast. Within 6 months I went from a size 4, to to a size 12. No amount of diet or exercise made any difference. My self esteem plummeted. Alarmed, I asked my gyno. She urged me to "give it more time", and so I did. After the first year, my weight regulated and things went back to normal... or so I thought. I used to be a borderline sex addict. It was all I thought about. I assumed that I lost ALL interest in sex because of my self esteem during my "heavy stage". But even as my weight faded, my libido never returned. Sex became my least favorite chore.

Then the pain started. I began having horrible, debilitating cramps every day. The only thing that helped was high doses of caffeine. Then the heart palpitations and anxiety started (from the caffeine I'm sure), but without it I couldn't even work. After that, sex became increasingly painful, until every thrust felt like he was punching me in the uterus. My whole body would seize up, trying to keep him from hurting me. Then it began to feel as though I was being penetrated by razor blades. It didn't just feel as though I was dry; it felt like I was using a sandpaper condom. It was a living nightmare. The only thing to lend any relief was a special numbing lubricant. Even then, I would often have to sit on an ice pack after and cry.

I thought it was just my endometriosis getting steadily worse. I saw doctor after doctor. Pills, shots, creams, dilators... nothing provided more than a slight, temporary relief. And then the final straw began. If I dared to try and orgasm, without fail, I would be writhing in pain for hours, overcome by the worst cramping... hell, the worst pain I had ever felt.

And that's when I gave up. At 24 years old, I gave up. I resigned myself to a life of either chastity, or excruciating sex. I would do it for my boyfriend of 6 years, but it felt like rape... and he knew it. He could see it on my face. I began to urge him to find surrogate partners.

When I heard about all of the symptoms related to Mirena, I was shocked. Never have I felt so angry and so overjoyed at the same time. I made an appointment at once. Then I found these posts, and I cried for hours. To hear of so many women who have been devastated by this... it was such a comfort to know that there was hope for me yet.

Fast forward. It's been three days since I've had that horrible thing removed, and already I feel different. Things I didn't even realize were wrong are changing. I want to be affectionate again. I love curling up in my boyfriend's arms again. It doesn't hurt to cough. The thought of sex has already become enticing once-more! Just two days after, sex caused only mild pain. I had two (!) orgasms and had only the slightest cramping for a few minutes.

For the love of all things good, if any of this sounds familiar, GET YOUR MIRENA REMOVED! The worst part is, not a single doctor I've talked to had any idea of these common side effects! Even when I had it removed, they insisted I must have and STD. I've been tested numerous times since these problems arose, and I'm clean. Bayer has now covered their butt and put these things in their fine print. But if they really gave a damn about us, doctors would know.

Hi ladies - thanks for sharing your stories, I recently visited my obgyn for my six week check and she brought up the topic of birth control and the Mirena almost before I sat down... I was a little skeptical but booked in to have the implant next week. I started doing some research on google and i'm So glad to have found this site and your experiences as I will be canceling my appt. tomorrow... I agree with some comments here about implanting a piece of plastic in your body that emits hormones as scary and messes with the natural functioning of your body. With soooo many negative experiences there must be some pretty nice kickbacks from Bayer to these Drs who continue to promote it. Shameful!!!!!

Reading this is insane, I got my Mirena in July 2011, insertion sucked, but manageable, had side effects immediately, bled for two months straight, but doctor said it was normal. About 6 months later, more severe symptoms started to occur, terrible acne on my face and shoulders, I finally got it somewhat under control with benzaclin, but even with it it's not great. Never had acne in high school, and couldn't get any doctor to agree it was the mirena, soon after my mood has changed severely, everything and everyone pisses me off and I've lost all my friends, but I blamed all my symptoms thus far on stress, due to the intensive training I was doing in school. I also have the most intense lower back pain, it feels like my hip bones are being snapped off by someone, that I blamed on sitting long periods of time in class, but now I know it was the mirena. In the last 4 months or so, I've had very noticeable weight gain, I started gaining weight as soon as I got mirena, but before I kept it at bay through exercise but now it's very obvious, and only in the abdominal region, much late a big pregnant belly, and I've constantly been embarrassed to let my boyfriend see me naked! I have a hang-over-your-jeans gut at 125-30ish pounds!!!! When I got mirena I weighed about 99 pounds, 5'3". Always been thin until now. Which brings me to the worst part of all, chronic bacterial/yeast infections!!!! Which made me feel like I was insane because I keep myself very very clean, wear cotton panties, shower right after sex and working out, don't sleep in panties, all that and was STILL getting them. It's been awful, but I've just been blaming everything on stress, and now I know.
Also had some sleep issues more recently like, not being able to sleep through the night, waking up dying of hotness, even with the a/c pretty high.

Another awful side effect is the crippling anxiety, which is pretty terrible when I do a lot of public speaking in a foreign language, I'll always been a pretty confident person before mirena, but now I'm constantly TERRIBLY nervous, which really hinders my language skills. Also experienced pain during sex, pretty much every symptom listed by others, I also knew multiple friends of mine had their's removed due to terrible symptoms.
the only positive thing was my periods got some-what lighter.

I ABSOLUTELY WOULD NOT RECCOMMEND THIS T-SHAPED TORTURE DEVICE.

It has essentially ruined my life, and with luck will have it removed tomorrow or the following week, because, judging by the other comments, I will finally get my life back.

^^^ I forgot to mention my hair loss problems as well, comes out in large clumps, brushing, washing whatever, hair feels thinner and more damaged than it should for someone who hasn't dyed or used hot tools in over a year.

I got my Mirena in like April of 2009. It really hurt going in but it was short-lived. Since that time I can honestly say I have had some of the good as well as the bad side affects. My periods are short and only come about every five or six weeks. They are also light and I am able to wear a light tampon with no issues. Also I don't have to worry about remembering to take a pill or pay that co-pay every month.

On the other-hand I have had extreme exhaustion. I can lay in bed and sleep for the entire weekend if no one will bother me. I feel guilty because I have two children but sometimes I just can't bring myself to get out of bed. I began to worry that I was depressed because this level of (what I called laziness) was not like me. I have definitely gained weight since the Mirena, however this has actually been a good thing for me. I was always very skinny and now my husband really enjoys my curves.

I have fluctuated with the sex drive and didn't think to associate it with the Mirena. I just assumed maybe I was angry with my husband or again maybe depression. But the drive comes and goes. I have sometimes had pelvic pain after sex and my lower abdomin will be tender to the touch. My husband definiely reports that he can feel the strings and I have even been able to feel them if I try. I am going on five years with the Mirena and most recently I have struggled with anxiety. We were out to dinner with my family a few nights ago and I could not enjoy myself for some reason. I kept having to go to the bathroom to cry and I didn't want to tell anyone because I was too ashamed. Actually now that I am thinking about it this has happened on at least three other occasions where I am out and doing things that I would normally enjoy and feel like I am stuck inside my own head and unable to relate to anyone around me.

I realize the negative side affects do sound bad however I would honestly still get another Mirena. I believe knowledge is the first step to dealing with any illness and I feel like I can make an effort to combat the negative symptoms. While on the Mirena I also received my degree with a 3.94, started a new career, maintained my household and all while worrying little or not at all about my period or getting pregnant. I love my body the way it is now and have never felt more confident.

Eveybody reacts differently and I feel it is important to be educated about what some possible side affects could be. Good luck to everyone.

Dear tigerlily since having mirena placed my periods did not fade or go away. In fact and they became ten times heavier. I ft as if I had constant sever PMS my breast hurt constantly and doubled in Size. My sex drive flew out the window and my yeast infection has been constant despite repeated treatment. I have gain at least 15lbs and instead of falling out my hair became gray buy the tufts (I have black hair...or used to!). My obgyn says if I have this removed I may have to have my uterus removed due to endomitriosis. I intend to have this device remove and get a new obgyn asap! Thank you for your story.
Signed,

I was so happy to find this blog and read these numerous stories that it almost brought tears to my eyes.
Four months after having my daughter, I decided to have the Mirena implanted upon recommendation of my OB. Prior to getting pregnant, I had been on Ortho Tri Lo, which had worked excellent for me for years. When I met with my OB to discuss birth control options post partum, I stated that I wanted to get back on the Ortho Tri Lo; however, she advised against it, stating that many women a lot of times don't have the same positive experience with the pill they were using prior to getting pregnant. Her response seemed odd to me, but I trusted her judgement and decided to go with the Mirena.
In July of 2010, I had my appointment. The process, to me, was relatively painless and I went back to work following the procedure. About 40 minutes later, I was experiencing such horrible pain on my right side stemming down into my leg that I could barely function. It took every ounce of energy to get home from work that night. By the following Monday, the pain was unbearable. I missed work and made an appointment to see my OB. They performed a vaginal ultrasound and found that I had an ovarian cyst that ruptured. My OB stated that it wasn't due to the Mirena, but was probably there prior to insertion, which in turn, aggrevated it. I had a hard time believing this because she had conducted a thorough exam prior to the Mirena insertion, and I had no issues before the IUD either. She stated that it would be a matter of a week or so before I would start feeling better; that my body was attemping to absorb the ruptured cyst.
2.5 years later, I am finally going to have this thing removed! The side affects and issues that I've had since the Mirena are unlike anything I've ever experienced in my life. The pain has never gone away completely; it comes and goes at random. Worse than the pain, however, are the extreme mood swings, bouts of depression and severe anxiety; again, something that I've never dealt with in my life. It breaks my heart because I feel like I've missed out on truly enjoying so many precious moments with my daughter that I will never get back. Also, I've exercised religiously since high school (34 now), and even all during my pregnancy. Now, no matter how hard I exercise and eat healthy, I seem to GAIN weight. The worst is the bloatedness; it literally looks like I'm 4 months pregnant!
The strangest thing is how all of these symptoms have been progressing a year after having the Mirena put in. Reading these stories has made me realize that I, too, am not crazy, and that all of this is a result of my body working against this foreign object. I look as if I've aged 10 years in the past 2 years! Even my signifcant other says that I don't look like I used to; that I just look tired and run down. At one point, he was strongly encouraging me to see a counselor or get on an anti-depressant. While this is something I've never struggled with, I was seriously considering it, willing to try anything that would help me to feel better.
At any rate, my appointment is scheduled for January 14th, and I just pray to God that I will be my old self again after removal. I truly hope that this IUD hasn't completely altered my body chemistry to the point of no return.
I'm sorry that anyone has had to go through this experience for something that seems so preventable. It appears that not enough research has been done or stories have been brought to light on the Mirena, so women aren't aware of the extreme side affects, especially considering that many of them seem to gradually appear over time.
If you do happen to read this and are experiencing any adverse reactions to the Mirena shortly after insertion, don't wait - GET IT TAKEN OUT! It's not worth the misery to come.

just thought i'd add my experience with mirena. a few weeks after i had the mirena inserted, i noticed that my left lip and the tip of my nose felt weird when i'd rub or touch it. just a little tingly. over the span of a week, the tingly/numbness feeling spread to the whole left side of my face, from the scalp to my chin. it felt so strange, like i could poke my face and feel the touch sensation, but it was just weird feeling. it was completely distracting and i felt crazy, i couldn't do anything without it bothering me. eating especially.

i contacted my obgyn and she said that she had never heard of that before and perhaps i had some other issue, like bells palsy or something and should see my primary care doctor. hmmm...to the internet!! that's when i discovered this blog and THANK GOD i did!

as soon as i returned from vacation i made an appointment to have the mirena taken out. my obgyn acted like i was a nutjob. like i was a hypochondriac making up symptoms and my diagnosis. when i told her what i'd "read on the internet from other women experiencing similar symptoms" she pretty much did everything she could to not roll her eyes. *sigh*

needless to say, once that sucker was out, within a week ALL the numbness was completely gone as if it had never happened. i emailed my doctor to tell her, but she didn't really have much of a reaction, probably nodding and saying "Mmmhmm suuuure" in her office :)

I am done with Mirena! I took it our yesterday and I think it's the best decision I've made! I got Minera inserted 6 weeks after my daughter was born and I have been an emotional, angry, crying, weight gaining, sad rollercoaster. I was selfish and just all about my daughter...no time or patience for anyone else especially husband, I had set up an appointment to see a therapist! After my baby I lost all my baby weight but gained it right back (almost to where I weighed pregnant!) and I workout 4 times a week! I was starting to get really mean towards my husband , family and friends and everyone else , even people that I didn't know! It was scaring me...I was blaming it on post partum but I started doing research. Even though My midwife told me that the Mirena hormone does not go outside your uterus and that there weren't any side effects the Dr that removed me yesterday told me otherwise. Also beware... Mirena moves inside you many more times that people think. A few weeks ago I started feeling these bend over in pain shocks in my uterus and then when it was that time to check I couldn't find my strings, so I set an appt ASAP! Well I got an ultrasound and it had moved towards the left and if I had left it longer it would of inserted into my uterus. My Dr did not give me a hard time about removing it which any Dr shouldn't... It's our body our right. My Dr said the weight gain is water weight and she sees it all the time, the water weight, the moodiness, depression, everything. I swear as soon my Dr removed it, I felt like a pressure and relief was taken off. Fingers crossed I get better! Good luck to everyone! This blog is amazing!

I am young to have Mirena I think-- I got it inserted when I was only 20, right after I got engaged so-- August 2011.
I got the Mirena because I have always had very heavy periods that were irregular, came with terrible mood swings, and migraines. I also have a bad history of yeast infections. It seemed like I would get them constantly.
My cervix is also really dry and irritable for some reason, and I would bleed during and after sex-- sometimes I would spot for days afterwards. And condoms seemed to make these conditions much worse.
BUT, after I got the Mirena all these problems seemed to stop. -- especially (and thankfully) the infections. I used to have about 5-6 a year, and I haven't had one since the Mirena!
My gynecologist was really surprised when she inserted it because I handled the pain very well. I've never had any children, so I did not know what to expect. I guess I have a fairly high pain tolerance though (I've been dealing with Rheumatoid Arthritis and Lupus like symptoms since the age of 13). I even went to work afterwards...
My sex drive has increased-- but maybe that's because it's no longer painful, so it's now actually enjoyable.
I've also lost weight while on Mirena, but I attribute that to no longer eating a hamburger every day (that's what I did while on oral contraceptives).
Obviously, since I'm visiting this blog, I am having some issues with it. While overall, I do feel much better, I do feel a dull heaviness in my lower left abdomen. I've had an ultrasound done and I don't have a cyst there, so that's good.
I also have a strange sensation in my abdomen when I'm ovulating... but I think that's just me ovulating.
The worst thing is that I feel symptoms of pregnancy. Now, I've never been pregnant before, but I do know some of the symptoms. I have a heightened sense of smell, I have cravings, my breasts are tender, and I have mild cramping in my abdomen. I also sometimes have nausea and I feel overly-tired, and I don't have a period because of the Mirena, so it's hard to tell. In the past year, I have taken one pregnancy test at my doctor's office, and it said I wasn't pregnant. My doctor says that many women FEEL pregnant while on Mirena...
I don't like that feeling one bit. It makes me feel so paranoid, especially knowing the risks of being pregnant with an IUD in! In fact, I'm probably going to take a pregnancy test tomorrow just to be safe... I keep smelling cat pee everywhere and my husband and I don't have ANY cats... It seems like something that would happen to me, I'm very unlucky! ha!
I am planning on keeping the Mirena in until the five year time period is up if everything goes well. This is my last semester of college, and my husband and I hope to be ready for a baby by 2016.
I'm so sorry for some of these women that have had these bad experiences! I hope mine doesn't turn that sour...

UNREAL! I am you...you all are ME! Until I saw some one else post about this I thought I was going completely bat shit crazy. When I look back on my symptoms, outbursts, infections, fatigue, exhaustion, cramps, pains that double me over sometimes it all aligns with the insertion of my IUD last year. I have endometriosis and would have otherwise blamed many symptoms on that...UNTIL I started having the craziest mood swings. I have never been an angry, tantrum type and yet this year has been NUTS and I had the best year of my life so far! I was always the logical girl.....the one who couldn't understand those moody chicks...then I became them < 100. (meanwhile this has been the HAPPIEST year of my life, how can that be?)

I can't even get in to all the issues I have had and, until now, I thought I was really losing it, falling apart, getting old (29)! Tomorrow I am scheduling an appointment and getting this thing out...NOTHING is worth feeling like you can't handle running out of butter for your toast and thinking that something is really wrong with you (and your fiance wondering if he made a mistake with how you freak out for no reason at times)...At this point, I can't afford NOT to TRY. *swings feet up in to stirrups*

If you are thinking about getting Mirena don't do it. I had gotten mine in August of 2008. The first year was great.I didn't get my period and I didn't have to worry about taking a pill on a daily basis. Since that first year things have started to go down hill. I started losing chunks of the hair on my head and started getting little hairs on my chin (gross). I am exhausted all the time despite how much sleep I would get. I started feeling moody and depressed. Over the past year and a half these symptoms have all gotten worse with the arrival of more symptoms. I have completely lost my sex drive and no longer feel sexy which is horrible considering I have recently wed. I have gained about 20 pounds even though I had started exercising regularly, and the depression has just gotten worse. Honestly there are times when I don't even know who I am. I have an appointment with my obgyn next week. With any luck this thing will be out of my body and I can begin to get my life back.

**UPDATE***
I am one week FREE of the Mirena and I could tell the difference within 3 days. The first 2 were a little rough and I can definitely feel my hormones readjusting but at least now it is MANAGEABLE! That "edge" that made me feel like I was on the verge of freaking out all the time, is gone.

For the first time in awhile I feel joy and hope.....for the first time in a lonnnnnng time....I am starting to feel like myself. If my body never recovered any more than right now I would be fine, but I'm certain that is going to keep improving. I can *feel* the difference already.

I was afraid of taking out the Mirena and finding out it WASNT the mirena causing these issues but that it was really ME....that I had changed...that I was falling apart....BUT I wasn't....and I'm not....I am happy to be back to working 12 hour days instead of sleeping 12 hour days....*I think that's a good thing ;)*

I hope all of you that are suffering find what is making it unbearable, for me IT WAS THE MIRENA!

It isn't you that is messed up...it is that thing inside of you.
Thank God I am free from it now.

Had Mirena 10 years ago, thought all was fine. I had the worst migraine of my life, got MRI, got EKG, all normal. I went numb on my right side and couldn't speak. Never thought it could be iud. Fast forward to June 2011. I had my fourth child, another Mirena inserted. I began having hip and leg pain, heart palpitations and migraines. My doc ordered blood work, tests all came back normal, no arthritis, no cancer...no explanation. I began getting CONSTANT yeast infections, two to three times a month! It is now Jan 2013, I feel like going mad with eczema, yeast infections, hair loss, hip and joint pain, a "locked" hip on right side. After researching Mirena side affects, I have to say I cannot believe I did not put the pieces together sooner. I am having it removed this Friday!

Anonymous said...

I forgot to mention, as another post stated, I was also suspected to have MS, but the test came back normal. These tests were done one year after getting Mirena. Mirena should be removed from the market. It is horrible to think how many women are suffering thinking they have horrible diseases, and Mirena is probably the cause!

I had my Mirena removed on New Years Day...I waited 8 hours in the emergency room. I knew something was very wrong, but until I researched it myself I believed it couldn't have been my IUD. My side effects were as follows:
Severe breast pain, swelling and lactating(after I had been done breast feeding for over a year and a half)
blurred vision, abdominal cramping, menstrual cramping, bloating. feeling of pregnancy, chronic fatigue, shortness of breath, clumps of hair lost, tightness in throat, cricopangeal muscle spasms, going from a normal mammogram in 2010 to 3 nodules in 2012...chest tightness, misdiagnosis 3 times for GERD (Gastric esophageal reflux disease), chronic dysphagia. Chest pains, heartburn, heart workups and hospitilization.
And since 2011...depression, anxiety, memory loss, slurred speech, weight gain, episodic muscle spasms, involuntary muscle movements, seizure like episodes, electric charges through my body, muscle weakness, and work ups for multiple sclerosis...just to find no answers. I am happy to say since I got the evil out I am feeling better, but still have lost some use of left foot and hand. We have to inform everyone of this! It is deadly...and if not for a supportive family could have destroyed my marriage and my life.

I have had the Mirena for a year. I got it after the birth of my 4th baby. I have loved it. I haven't had all the bad reactions that other people have had. I just started having abnormal cramping and lower back pain, and am going to the doctor this week. We are talking about getting pregnant again, so i will probably have it removed, but for me and both of my older sisters, mirena has been great!

I am so glad I found this website. Because my doctors had sworn there were no side effects, it never crossed my mind that Mirena might be my problem.

I had twins back in March, and lost a lot of weight immediately. I only had 10 lbs to go in order to get back to pre-pregnancy weight. After my 6 week check-up, I had Mirena put in. At home, I began to do vigorous exercise (workouts at home, running, walking) and watching what I ate. I actually gained weight, and have not been able to lose it, no matter how hard I try. I have gained almost 10 lbs, even though I am working hard to lose weight. Since we don't have bad food in the house, my husband has lost 20 lbs, and he is not doing exercise. He also sneaks junk food on his way home from work!

I feel bloated all of the time, and get a feeling like menstrual cramps frequently. My breasts have increased in size. At first I thought that was due to breastfeeding, but I have since stopped, and my breast size has not decreased.

I am not really interested in sex, and find it feels weird now.

Then there's the acne!

I just want my hormones to do their own thing, so I am getting this IUD removed tomorrow. I want to feel like myself again.

I have only had the mirena in for 3 months and am already having bad side effects! I feel nauseous a lot, get dizzy quite often, have gained weight, have lost my sex drive and now am having severe low back pain! Not to mention, the bleeding for weeks at a time! I thought this thing was supposed to help your bleeding. I bled 3 weeks last month. I want to get this thing out but since I can't take birth control pills, I don't know if I have any other birth control options other than to get my tubes tied. But, I have to do something!

Congratulations! You stood up for yourself when you knew something was wrong, women should celebrate the fact that we don't choke down pills because the "doctor thinks " fuck that shit!! Excuse me Ans the language but this iud has given me hell and the moment it got removed i got a head rush and a smile, i will never let a doctor tell me "it certainly isn't because of a hormonal foreign object that i have attached to your uterus" BS if they weren't stuffing a big paycheck down your throat then your compassion for humanity wouldn't allow you to do this to people.find me at Ashelanna@yahoo.com

I never knew and still dont what is effecting me and never would have thought it could be the mirena. As I read a lot of these posts I cried and cant believe how much people are going thru the same stuff as me. I am going to get it removed as soon as possible I soo much want to be back to my old life where I was energetic and happy.

Thank you and thank you for this, I have had mire a about two years and half a go, I really can relate to all the symptoms, lack of appetite in sex, constant infections, soreness after sex, bad odor, night sweating, numbness in my hands and legs, hair loss, anxiety and depression.

I just turned 40 and i know it is because of this IUD, I am definitely taking it off, I was in Singapore last week and talked to friend that mentioned her sister ended up loosing her legs because of serious IUD infection. So no matter what the GP says I am taking this IUD out.

I had a Mirena put in after my first child and had such abad reaction to it i had it taken out 2 months later. I was in constant pain and had serious heavy bleeding, none of which the doctor said was from the mirena. well I had a second child when my first was almost 3 and they suggested the Mirena again and I went for it, worst case senario I could have it removed again like last time. Well I had it put in mid january 2012 and they failed to go over ALL of the possible side effects. I got pregnant in July and had a miscarriage because the Mirena is actually designed to prevent implantation, not pregnancy. I was told the mirena doesnt have the same limitations as "the pill" well, it does, I reasearched online after having the miscarriage that taking antibiotics will render ANY birth control method useless. I took antibiotics in june and got pregnant and in the end of July I was over 7weeks pregnant and had the miscarriage. My doctor didn't believe that I had been pregnant but any woman that has had one pregnancy or more KNOWS that feeling. since then i was put on anti depressants and they did nothing. ive gained weight, my skin looks terrible, my hair is nasty and falling out, ive noticed facial hair which really sucks. Ive also had worsening cramp each month when I should have had a cycle if i wasnt on the mirena. the last 2 weeks or so have been almost unbearable and sex has been so painful everytime. I checked the strings 3 nights ago and I felt a part of the mirena coming out, the pain was so bad I removed it and almost instantly the constant pain i had been feeling for 2 weeks was gone. unfortunately its back 10 fold and very sharp around where my ovaries are. I've also learned researching that women with PCOS (which I have) should NOT use the Mirena. From my past experiences with ovarian cysts I believe that is what I am experiencing now and they are most likely caused by the mirena and now with out the hormones from the mirena it feels like ive had atleast one cyst burst. I have not called my doctor yet, all tehy could do for me is charge me a copay to check if there are cysts and then in 2 weeks fight with them and my insurance to cover an ultrasound. Hopefully the pain wont get worse and everything will level out without any infections (which is another side effect not listed)
sorry this is a lot of rambling but I feel better getting all of this information out of me

Call me PITA, my boyfriend's new pet name for me since we met. In October of 2011 I decided to get the IUD because my other birth control methods were a wash and I had fibroids. My OBGYN highly recommended it and I didn't want to have any more kids because mine are grown now. Against my best friend’s wishes I got it anyway. My doctor told me that the side effects would be mild and would probably kick in around 3 months. Low and behold January of 2012 my body hasn’t been the same since and it was the same time I met My Love. As a 45 year old with a high metabolism, I’ve been petite and small my whole life (it runs in the family) and all of a sudden I have gained 15 pounds. I eat half of what I used to eat and work out. I have no desire for sex, a lump on a log dragging myself around the house, don’t smile or laugh, headaches at least every other day, left arm always falling asleep, low back and abdomen pain, no motivation, and all I want to do is sleep, cry and do nothing. This is the EXACT opposite of who I am and I’m not even going through the change. I don’t like it! So, I’m scheduled for surgery on February 11 to have a hysterectomy (removing the uterus and cervix) to not only remove my fibroids, mitigate my few bouts with cervical cancer, eliminate the worry of contraception, say goodbye to periods, and they can take my horrible side effects and the IUD with it! I didn’t find this blog until after I got the IUD so I hope the ladies out there who are considering the IUD seriously reconsider! I will keep you posted on my progress after surgery. I’m praying to the good Lord that I come back and My Love will see me for who I really am.

I had my merina for 4 years about two years into it all of a sudden I woke up one day with a horrible pain in my left arm mind you I was 21 at the time I swore I was having a heartattack! I went to the er and they found nothing wrong...it hurt for about a week after it went away I felt off everyday like something was just wrong like I was dying! I would get emotional and sweat and have shakes almost like I would have a panic attack. We would ne out walking around and I'd just stop. Whatever I was doing and stand there because I would get a sharp pain in my chest! And it always gave me bacterial infections! !! I went to.have it removed Jan 2 2013 and they said it had nothing to do with it.there were times I would wake up and throw up for weeks like I was pregnant ..since its been out I feel Normal again.it really made me feel like something was seriously wrong! I wouldn't recommend it to anyone stick with the pill!!!

Hi,
i had my first one inserted in march 2008 - painful but not totally unbearable. cramped like a @%#$^ for the whole day seemed good okay - my weight did creep up.
We moved house in dec 07 - i hadnt lived in a house with carpet since 1999 (asthmatic). I started having itching breakouts at what i thought was the 4-6 month after we moved. i put the rashes (urtucaria)that would pop up now and then down to this. i did get a cat later in 2009 - this itching ramped up before then though. i bump my skin brush against something hard - i rash up. I have been taking an allergy pill (cetirizine lasts about 24hrs) now thats $15 - 30 approx (depending on what brand i can get) A MONTH to stop me scratching myself raw for the past 4 /1/2 years!
no doc could explain it just take pills come back if you start having to take 2 a day.
Well. I was due to get it replaced in march this year but as i am going on a holiday in march i wanted to get it over and done with. WORST PAIN IN MY LIFE GETTING IT BACK I. omg - all i could do not to lie there and scream the practice waiting room wall down (and ive had gallstones - this beat it hands down)(43 and no kids BTW).
so all done go home and sulk for a bit - looking at the info booklet (which i perused the first time i got it - ripped the front cover off and filed it so i knew when to replace ....)
side effects - RASH URTICARIA - if i forget my pill i scrub myself raw. ive made a doc appt today to just talk to him, before i saw this - now i will be ringing up and making it a removal appt.
im crying right now - i need this out!!!!
thank you everyone.

So I am reading a lot of negative comments on here... It seems that a lot of ladies are having issues with this particular kin of BC... So here is my experience, and background to clarify it...
I have currently been on the mirena for 2yrs2mo. Before, from when I first started menstruating (@ 9yrs old, btw), I have gone from pill to pill to patch to ring and back again. My first cycle lasted almost 3weeks, and i was going through several super-pads a day. Mind you, I was ONLY NINE YEARS OLD. My next period didnt happen for almost a year, and never, ever, ever, has it gotten into anything resembling a regular cycle. Not on high dose pills (which made me cramp for weeks on end, and hallucinate, and dont even get me started on the moodnswings, as if adolescence wasnt bad enough); the low dose pills (may as well have not been taking anything) the patch (cuz teenage acne wasnt bad enough, lets make it cover my skin like a nightmare case of chicken pox) and the ring (no period but juxst a seriously vile discharge that was enough to force me to wear a tampon for it to keep from looking like i had urinated myself).... My mother, when I first started menstruating, was obviously worried and freaked out. Every other woman in my family has been regular down to the hour. So, in an effort to try and "jumpstart" my body into regularity, for the next 10yrs of my life I ran the gauntlet of BC methods that various medical proffessionals sworenwould set me straight.
Herein lies the catch. From about 17-19yrs old, I was on low dose pills. Nothing changed right? Well I certainly never got pregnant, but was still only having my period about every 5-7months. So, finally, mother and medical people alike conclude that maybe everybody really is DIFFERENT, and decide that a low dose hormone is ok for me because I just happen to have a really light, really infrequent cycle. So, tired of being nervewracked about the "ghost week"pill on my regimen, I ask for the Mirena. Especially being in the military now, I really have had a hectic lifestyle and got really bad about taking my pill every day on time. So, I got the Mirena IUD in November of 2010. Now, what negative side effects have I had?
None that I hadnt already dealt with from everything else I had tried. In fact, almost none to speak of. Sure, it hurt like an SOB getting put in, and i had moderate cramps off and on for a couple months, but as time progressedd, thos gradually went away. By the 4month mark, there were no cramps other than what I get from my period. Yes, i still (randomly/occasionally) have a "period" but its no different from whatbi was having before.
Moral of the story, ladies, is that every BODY is different, including from generation to generation, or sibling to sibling. The Mirena may have given some women the really bad side effects that other women get from the pill, or patch, or ring. That doesnt mean that any one form of BC is inherently bad.

I knew it! I got my Mirena IUD inserted soon after my first child was born. I noticed a lot of things were different.

1) I had issues with depression and anxiety before, but now it was getting so bad I was beginning to develop obsessive behaviors to cope, which I have never done before.
2) I went back on an anti-depressant, but I couldn't believe how tired I felt. I figured it was part of being a new mom. Then I went to work and I figured it was just part of working and having a kid, but in this past month things that were nuisances have become full blown problems. I'm utterly exhausted. I wake up and feel like I didn't sleep a wink. I can hardly focus enough to drive safely anymore.
3) While I stopped having a period for nearly a year, now I am bleeding at random and quite heavily.
4) I have begun to bloat significantly and my weight has begun to fluctuate between five and ten lbs as I bloat. Even my husband can tell just be looking at me when it is happening.
5) I have been aggressively trying to lose weight (which I put on significantly after the IUD) with no results. I'm struggling even to maintain my weight!
6) My hair has been thinning since I got the IUD inserted, but now it's falling out even faster and I'm threatening to become notably bald!
7) On top of that my skin has taken a dramatic turn for the worse. I have uneven skin and bumps all over my face when typically my face is flawless.
8) Also, my nails have become brittle, and downright yellow.
9) I have also had thickening body hair!
10) Ok, and sex? You can forget it. When my husband and I try, it's downright uncomfortable.
11) Also, there has been a drastic vaginal pH change, making for all kinds of skin integrity issues.

All these things scream hormones to me. My body is throwing up as many signs as it can that I am having some sort of hormonal imbalance. I went to my doctor and told them I thought it could be my IUD. He said no, but he thought it could be hyperthyroidism. (which results in a HORMONAL IMBALANCE, I might add.) So I had a blood test done and of course, my thyroid is fine. He didn't feel there was a need to do any follow-up. Does he really expect that I'm just going to DEAL with all this? No, and no one should feel like this is o.k. either. I have a Pap due in May. I'm calling and seeing if I can't push it up and get this damn thing taken out of me while I'm at it. I will definitely come back and tell you all how the symptoms change after removal.

Hi Im Anonymous from January 29 2.39am above - well, its out friday 31st Jan about 1.30pm Brisbane time- im sure my tummy is flatter already - but im still bloating up and down. Does anyone know when you tend to get your first period post mirena - ive had implanon in for approx just under 5 years - mirena just on 5 (not before i got a new one in last week (d'oh)) and on the pill before that - i would say its been 10 odd years since my last 'real' period.
all opinions gratefully read! will post in a few weeks to let you know how im going!!

After having my son, whom i concieved while correctly taking oral contraceptives I decided to try the Mirena. Being a former soldier I am seen by the VA. One doctor informed me that since I have a history of mental illness (mood swings: poss of bipolar?) I should get he copper IUD implanted because it releases less hormones. I decided to wait and research the Mirena. When I moved I finally made the appointment. Implantation was painless. Before I had the IUD I had heavy periods that lasted for weeks. Pre Pregnancy my menstrual cycle was normal 5-7 days once a month.I have never had cramps that I couldn't deal with. No medication needed. Sfter implantation I bled a little. Noticed moderate cramping for up to 12 hours. I have now had the IUD for a year. Over this year I have had my period for 2-2 1/2 weeks out of the month, STRONG menstrual cramps, bloating to the point where i thought I was pregnant and CRAZY mood swings. I am always tired. However instead of gaining weight I have absolutely no appetite and have lost a A scary amount of weight (i.e. Pre Preg weight 167 Max weight during preg 220 Current weight 120) Mind you this has only been a year. I no longer enjoy the things I used to. I don't look forward to anything and it has come to the point that I have isolated myself from everyone. I am SO HAPPY I am not the only one experiencing these things minus the weight loss! Looking forward to getting this THING taken out. Defintely not for me... email me if anything I haeve a lot more to say LOL SOrry for the terrible grammar and/or spelling.. I am EXHAUSTEDDDD

After battling unrelenting face, chest, and back acne and slowly losing my hair for the last six months, I recently did some serious research into whether or not Mirena was the culprit.

I had it placed in September 2012 and on Monday Feb. 4/13 (almost six months to the day later) I had it removed. Like the other women here, I was swayed with promises of hassle-free birth control, no periods, and generally no worry for five years. Wrong, wrong, wrong! I can’t count the number of times I went back and forth to the doctor over the last few months complaining about my terrible skin only to be told time and again that it “definitely can’t be Mirena” and being sent home with more samples of different topical acne treatments that NEVER worked.

While I didn’t have many other side effects, my sex drive plummeted…mainly because I was so self conscious about the acne covering my chest, back, and face! At 25, I hadn’t experienced an outbreak this bad since I was 14 and at this stage in life I am not happy about dealing with something I thought was long behind me.

The final straw was coming across a blog dedicated to women who had developed alopecia from their IUDs and I realized the convenience was not at all worth sacrificing my hair or skin or general well-being for. I am beyond thankful that my symptoms were mild in comparison to others I have read on here and on other blogs and message boards.

I called the doctor first thing Monday morning and was luckily able to get in to have it removed that day. My doctor is on vacation, but the doctor standing in for her of course assured me AGAIN that my concerns likely didn’t stem from Mirena and how I should reconsider having it removed. I didn’t balk and the doctor removed it and wrote me up a new prescription for the pill, which I am not thrilled about, but for the time being it makes the most sense for me and my partner.

And while it has only been a few days now, I can truly say I feel much better. Better than I thought I could feel so soon…free sort of? Maybe it’s all in my head, but I feel ‘lighter’ and more in control, not to mention hopeful! The acne on my back has cleared up substantially already and my face and chest are slowing following suit. On the downside, I am bleeding very heavily. I'm talking soaking a super tampon in less than three hours kind of heavy, which I have never experienced once since starting my period at thirteen, but I'll take it!

Maybe Mirena works for some women, but going into it not knowing for sure isn’t worth the risk in hindsight. I’m lucky that my symptoms were mild in comparison to some horror stories I’ve read and I can only hope more women research and ask questions before getting roped into this seemingly “perfect” birth control.

It is evident from the countless posts on here as well as numerous other message boards, blogs, and websites that the likelihood of side effects occurring has been grossly misrepresented by the company. There is no way the margin for adverse reactions can be as slim as they claim with the sheer volume of women coming forward with their grievances.

To the women suffering from current and post-Mirena issues: I feel for you and wish you a speedy recovery from this uterine dwelling demon.

And to the makers of Mirena, those in healthcare pushing Mirena, and those denying or hiding the hideous nature of Mirena: SUCK IT.

February 13, 2013....it's about five or six months of having mirena.....and.........I feel sick, sleepy, craving junk food endlessly, feeling pregnant and so on....weight gain, facial hair, acne which bloody spoil my face even though i had tried exfoliation etc, falling hair, mood swings, tired nearly all the time, feeling so unfit and was so fit before had this thing inserted. Itchiness down there....bloody ridiculous, feeling low and i hate it. I've been listening to my body and it is not right....i want the 'me', myself and I...the original, normal self...this thing is not doing a favour to my body and i am having it removed soon. I don't care if it's expensive, i am worth more than this foreign body inside me. Thank you everyone for helping each other on this blog. It has helped me too. (UK)

I have had a bit of a different experience. I am 27 (almost 28) and got one around my 23rd birthday. I just had it removed and replaced.

I had one for almost the 5 years. I loved it the whole time. I had no side effects I noticed. I think any weight I gained was from lack of exercise and fatty/sugar foods.

I used to take the pill and had the worst IBS. I could not be farther the 30 seconds from the bathroom. It was horrible. I realized the pill may be the culprit and stopped. 2 weeks later I was IBS free and have never had issues since.

I loved the mirena the whole time. Very little pain in the beginning and after 6 or so months of small spotting I stopped having a period. Small spotting was much better then a period once a month. It's been 4 years since I had to use a real pad or tampon. I saved some $!

I chose the mirena so I would stop having a period. I ride motorcycles off road and riding 6+ hours with a tampon is the worst!

I had some mood swings but only because I am human. It was hard to tell if I was pmsing because there are no signals. If I was around women (for a long period of time) who were menstruating by body would pick up on it and just tinge color. I live with men and don't work with women so the grocery store is the most I see ladies for the most part.

I knew the replacement time was coming and could feel like the hormones were changing. I was tired all the time. (Maybe a side effect of a cold) and my mood swings were worse. (this was with the 4 year old one in still)

The exchange I experienced two weeks ago was a different experience. It was really painful! I had no idea how much it could hurt. But after a day or so and some chocolate it went away.

It's been two weeks since I got the replacement put in. I have felt worse about my self. But only because after I changed jobs a year ago I gained 10 lbs and am ready to lose it.

My acne is off charts right now. I have always (always) had bad acne. But when I read the mouth acne on the other posts I think the mirena is why I mine is worse. I have some cramps at the moment.

I think the pleasure of not having a period and no need for protection during sex is a good trade off for me.

After reading the other comments I am going to pay more attention to my depression, moods, occasional migraines, weight and acne knowing it's not me. It's the Mirena....

All I can say is Wow. I have been out of mind wondering what is wrong with me and this may be it. I am 31 and on year 2 of my second IUD. I had the first in 2006 and don't recall any trouble with it. I had the new one placed in 2011. I have only payed attention to my issues in the last 6 months. I thought turning 30 had really done me wrong! I have been getting cyst-like painful acne, headaches, shooting pains from my abdominal area straight down through my vaginal area, sore breasts, moody, angry, short temper, lossing lots of hair, can't lose weight even after cutting soda from my diet, and a few other things. After reading these entries and how they are all similar to my problems, I don't feel as crazy. Thanks for this blog.

I was going to just post a long comment detailing my experience with the Mirena, but I ended up writing three and a half pages on it. This is a link to the Google document I wrote up:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1-6TxsC99XL_TwYbUqgZLFjG88XVO8xKHYjNjOFsvdYI/edit?hl=en&pli=1&rm=demo

Basically, I have had the same experience as many of you. My symptoms are horrible and I can't wait to get this thing out of me as soon as I can. THANK YOU for writing this blog, and for your comments that made me know I wasn't alone in this!

I got mild discomfort having Mirena put in. i am okay with no periods. Having bad acne as a teenager mirena has keep my face clear. I was watching an add on TV stating all of it side effects of Mirena and I got to thinking....was the debilitating back pain I get every once in awhile from Mirena? I can't sit and I can't stand. I end up taking pain meds. This happens about once a year. I had 3 attacks this week. I think i will have to investigate further.

Thank you ladies for your post. I'm going thru the exact same thing with one difference, I'm a man and my girlfriend is experiencing all the symptoms being expressed on this blog. Mood swings, vaginal discharge, weight gain, and did I mention mood swings. I need help explaining to her it's the IUD. I believe this site will help. THANKS!!!

I am 3 weeks out from having my IUD removed and I already feel fantastic! I am no longer moody, depressed, angry, hopeless or tired. My skin is looking better and I can't wait for my hair to recover. My boyfriend only knew me for a brief amount of time before the IUD and he is amazed at the difference. Unfortunately for me it is not just the IUD that affects me this way, it's all birth control. I cannot believe that I have struggled my entire adult life thinking that I'm depressed or unstable when really it is all due to birth control. I spent about 8 months on no birth control and no anti-depressants and they were the best of my life. I lost 35 pounds without really trying and my family told me constantly that I had never been so pleasant to be around. I met the boyfriend, shortly thereafter got the IUD and it all went down hill from there. Then one day my hairdresser told me he could tell I have a Mirena IUD because of the way my hair was breaking. After that I started researching the IUD and found this blog. I finally connected the dots that the happiest time of my adult life was also the only time that I had not been on birth control. I had the thing removed the next day and pretty much instantly felt better. I am both excited to have figured this out about myself and a little mad that it took this long and I spent so much time struggling against something that I stood no chance of beating.

I am just as mad as the rest of you ladies! The Drs and pharmecudical companies don't care about anything but making a profit! They told me all the same lies about no side effects, and that it is impossible to get pregnant on the Mirena. Since fighting tooth and nail to get mine out, I discovered at least 2 other women went to the same Dr because they got pregnant on Mirena. Needless to say the babies died! When I though I was pregnant, my Dr refused tosee me until my husband mentioned malpractice lawsuit! I had the Mirena from Jan2009 to Dec2012, and had all those other horrible symptoms you girls mentioned. But the Drs didn't care. I worked in the medical field until my husband and I decided our 2 boys needed mommy at home. This sort of incomitence in the medical field makes me furious!

Hi, my name is Tamara and I've been dealing with some problems too =/ So I got the Mirena right after a suction aspiration abortion. I'm only 18, and my boyfriend and I were not at all ready for it. So anyway, it was inserted in Mid December of 2012, and so far it's been pretty crappy. I feel bloated all the time, (like I was when I was 6 weeks along)my first few periods had pretty bad cramping (which I had never had before)my boyfriend was stabbed two times by the needle-like "string", and I pretty much have an ongoing yeast infection. My first one was for a month straight- two tubes of cream couldn't fix it. And since then I've had three more, that two separate treatments of Diflucan couldn't stop. And it's becoming a pretty big problem, because when I "peel" down there it stings really bad. And you know how a yeast infection can kind of travel to your rear end? Well it's gotten drier and I have literally dripped blood into the toilet while taking a small/medium poo. And now, best for last, I get cramping probably 1 out of every 3 orgasms. And the feeling of the IUD being there just lingers, and feels sore. I am so disappointed in our health care professionals. It seems like they'll "forget to mention" very important side effects, just to make more money. I'm so frustrated, and I'm getting it out as soon as possible. Please share your experience with anyone you can.

I just wanted to briefly share that I believe I have been suffering from seizures due to the mirena Iud. I had my first Iud inserted in Dec 2007. I accidentally pulled that out about dec 2009 and had a new one inserted in jan 2010. I had a grand mal seizure in my sleep in March 2010. I started have what I refer to as episodes of confusion throughout the year and 2011. I was put on seizure meds in September 2011 due to the episodes. This seemed to stop everything but then I had a grand mal dec 2011 and a few more grand mals as well as breakthrough episodes. I went off the meds 6/28 because I believed that was causing me to have grand mal seizures. I went back to having episodes and have been under the care of a neurologist although I am not taking seizure medication. I had a grand mal seizure on 1/5/13 in my sleep. Had 4 episodes that month and a panic attack. I had a episode on 2/6/2013 and had my iud removed 2/7/2013. I had 2 grand mal seizures on 2/20 and my first period since the Mirena was removed on 2/22/2013. I am hopeful that it was the mirena and I hope my story will help others.

I have also recently reported to the bayer healthcare line about the possibility that my seizures and the IUD are related. I urge others to do the same. Also when you are on the line ask them if they have had any other reports. I did just that after being urged by another women and found out that despite reports being filed they claim there are none.

Ok ladies I need some advice. I got my Mirena in on Wednesday, Feb. 27. I was warned ahead of time by my best friend that it hurt like hell. Words can not even begin to describe how painful it was to get it put in. I took some ibuprofen for the cramps. I was told by the NP that I could have cramps for up to 4 days. The nurse told me they should be gone by that evening. I am on day 3 with it in. So far I have had extremely painful cramps(worse than anything I have felt on my period) that feel like someone is stabbing my stomach. They come and go. I have had acne break out around my mouth in the past 72 hours, and I never have acne. Yesterday, my back hurt so bad it felt like I was in labor again. I was due to start my period yesterday according to normal schedule. I have spotted a very very small amount since yesterday. Cramps are still there and I am not sure if that is from insertation or possible period symptoms. I have been exhausted since getting it. I have had night sweats since getting it. I have a tender spot in the top of my mouth which sprang up today. I had a migraine the day after I got it put in, but I get headaches so I am not sure if this is from it or not. I plan on calling the health unit on Monday, but I guess my question is are this normal symptoms to have immediately after having it inserted. Several people I know who have had it havent had any issues like I am experiencing. PLEASE give me input.

I had the mirena placed 8 weeks post partum...I have had it for almost six months now and have an appointment with planned parenthood to have it removed (they are a very cheap alternative to having a doctor do it if you don't have insurance or it doesn't cover it...they told me they only charge $80 to do it). SInce insertion I have had crazy mood swings and fly off the handle to the point I feel like I want to kill somebody over nothing. I have had weird, random streaking nerve pain down my right thigh. I can also feel the pressure from it whenever I sit down (it's not painful but my body lets me know that something is there that shouldn't be). And I have gained a good 14 lbs back(which is almost half of what I gained while pregnant). I constantly feel bloated and uncomfortable. And to my husbands demise I have pretty much zero sex drive (he has to work pretty hard to get me in the mood to do anything). This thing will be removed on Saturday.....hopefully my body and drive will follow suit fairly soon afterwards

I have also had an almost constant discharge inbetween periods that is incredibly annoying, and causes me to always have to wear a panty-liner for fear of ruining yet another pair of underwear...and the pad thing is a total turn-off to my husband who get irritated sometimes when he finds it down there

I have 3 children and had just married a man with 2 children. We decided that we needed to adapt to having a large family before having a child together. So I had an iud put in. It was painful at first but I got used to it. My husband complained of being poked by the strings. After about a year my periods became painful and I became very moody. My appetite increased and I started putting on weight quickly. 2 years later I was miserable. My stomach cramped , I stayed bloated, crazy mood swings. And sex was a rare occurrence , but painful when it happened. And I had gained about 40 lbs. I knew it was the iud. I made an appt to have it removed. It was painful once again. It didn't take long until I felt like I was getting back to the old me. About 6 months later I became pregnant. We were so excited!! Then things got bad real quick. Pain and bleeding. My doc said I had cysts in my tubes and that I had become pregnant ectopicaly

Thank you for having this blog, it is a relief to know its not just me. I had the mirena put in a month ago and WOW it has been interesting. First of all, it was the most painful experience ever (I am no rookie to pain as I have had 3 children via c-sec and kidney stones love me), but ouch, it was horrible. Since then I have been an emotional nightmare and short tempered. I have had the appetite of a teenager with a pot habit. I work out 5 days a week and have always been a clean eater. I cant explain what has gotten in to me.. oh wait... its Mirena. Im tired and nauseated and feel out of control.
I had the mirena put into all together get rid of aunt flow. Since I had a tubal ligation I had a few options: Ablation and Mirena. I opted for the less costly and invasive procedure..Mirena. Now I dont know what to do. Should I be more patient and give it a few more months? Should I take it out right away? I did it for the vain reason of not wanting a period but i dont think the trade off for being a hot mess and gaining weight is worth it. Maybe I answered my own question but any feedback would be great.
Thank you,
Rita

So I had the mirena and had some of the symptoms that everyone else is describing....weight gain, irritabilaty, a little bit of nerve pain constant bleeding fatigue and lack of sexual interest..So I scheduled an appointment to get it out....then I came across a review from this woman who said that she took it out on her own and it felt just like taking out a tampon....so I fidured I would try it and save the money it would cost to get it removed....I figured if it started to hurt when I pulled I would just wait till my appointment.... so I took it out and was amazed at how easy it was....I didn't even feel it come out....

I was wondering how long it took for the anxiety to go away because I am currently experiencing the same thing. I had mine removed a week ago because the anxiety is interfering with my job and daily life the on Dr and pcp Dr told me it wasnt the iud and i needed to seek psychiatric help and i needed to be put on anti depressants. I already am feeling 100x better the fatigue and fog is gone. I'm not sure if the hair loss will improve but i really hope it does. Im having to see a cardiologist now tomorrow due to an arrhythmia which i also think is from the iud I have high blood pressure and i was assured it was perfectly safe to have the iud as where i knew regular bc pills weren't. Right now my biggest concern is how long will it take for the anxiety to go away our at last become bareable??

This thing is horrible I am constantly bleeding and I'm unable to have sex anyway. When I bleed the cramps are so bad I'm not able to move. When I'm on my regular period before Mirena I only cramped for one day. With all the trouble I'm going through with Mirena I'd much rather just have another baby. I was in labor for 24 hours with my previous child and I'd trade that in for this immediately. Imagine being in labor everyday for it's been ten days for me now. I'm getting rid of this it's not worth it.

My Mirena

I got the IUD six months ago. When I got it inserted, the pain was so strong I vomitted and almost fainted. I was put on IV for about an hour. When I went home, I felt nauseous and I had cold sweats for several hours. The next day, I felt a little better, but nausea and cramping continued for weeks. I also spotted for about 2 and a half months straight.

I am 28 years old. I am generally a very positive person and emotionally stable. I eat well and work out between 2 to 4 times a week. In the past months, I have experienced depression, anger, mood swings, fatigue and lack of sex drive. The mood swings are so intense I sometimes feel like I'm not in control of my emotions. I am a college teacher and we have a few meetings a week. I use to like attending them. Now, I fear my reactions. I sometimes get so upset (over nothing), I shake and have to hold back the tears.

At first I thought my body just needed to adjust. I also figured the cramps would gradually go away. It wasn't the case. I have had mild to severe cramps almost 4 times a week for the last six months. I often get cramps during or after sex, which explains my lack of sex drive.

I have just gotten my IUD taken out and I really hope things get back to normal. Thankfully, getting it out was not nearly as painful as getting it inserted.

A friend of mine also had hers taken out and she's the one who pointed out it could be linked to my Mirena. She had had hers for years and noticed a huge difference in her mood and sex drive too.

I had mine in for 4 years. The first 2 were ok, but in the last 2 years I have been diagnosed with IBS, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, and an I diagnosed heart condition. I was and am still taking heavy pain killers for my leg, hip and back pain, and I had to quit my high paying career ( welder ), and seem to be unable to get help from the government. The mirena seriously screwed up my entire life. With all the pain and health issues, I have also had depression ( severe) as well as anxiety, and I am 23 years old. I asked several doctors if the IUD could be the cause of my symptoms and all said no. Please go with your gut ladies!! If you think it's your IUD, get rid if it!! I have had mine out for a month, and I am feeling so much better. No heart attack symptoms, less pain, less pills and more energy through the day. I'm not 100% yet, but it's been a steady climb. Who would have thought "normal" would feel so good!!

Thank you for sharing, I have had a very similar experience. So glad to know the cause, as my cardiologist couldn't find anything on my tests and told me it was all in my head.

I am in tears reading this... I dont even know who I am from day to day, even hour to hour sometimes ... I've had this mirena for only a little over 3 months, I've lost over 10 lbs which I CANNOT afford to to lose, I'm weighing 102 lbs, 40 yrs old, and have 3 AMAZING children that have watched their mother turn into a "monster".... my hair as well is falling out, saying I'm exhausted is an understatement!!! I just went to my primary care physician a week ago, told him everything I could possibly tell, he ordered complex blood work, no results as of today... I went to an urgent care yesterday because my Gyno cannot see me until the 28th, I cant wait another 6 days... I've been experiencing this pain and foul smelling bloody discharge for 2 months now, its unbearable and disgusting!!!! Also I have swollen lymph nodes along my bikini line that are growing by the DAY... dear GOD, I'm terrified at this point... I KNOW my body, I KNOW I'm not suddenly this irrational, mean, mother :"( thank you for sharing your story with me, it is confirmation that this thing must be removed!!!

SO MUCH WASTED TIME

Im a 21 year old female with uterine cancer. My doctors decided to insert a mirena into my uterus so that the horomones could go directly into my uterus and stop any more cancerous polyps from forming. Worst decision of my entire life!! The insertion of the mirena was so painful that it was hard to make it to my car afterwards. I cramped and POURED blood 24 hours a day 7 days a week for the first 6 months. I was taking 3200 mg of ibuprofen every 4 hours just to be able to walk around. Then suddenly the bleeding stopped and the cramps died down. I was so happy because I thought that my body had finally gotten used to the mirena and I would FINALLY get the awesome results that every female I know with mirena has. Then the cramps came back. I would wake up in the middle of the night screaming in pain. I was rushed to the hospital over and over again and each time the doctors told me nothing was wrong and sent me home with enough percocet jus to make it through the night. At the same time my hair was droppin out and my scalp flaked all the time it was so dry. I had the biggest patches of dry skin all over my face. Unexplained rashes poped up and a constant yeast infection that nothing got rid of. Yet everytime i went to the doctor they told me it was in the right place so there should be no pain. Mthey always made me feel like i was crazy and wasting their time. My emotions were also raging out of control. I cried all the time and snapped on everyone for everything.

About three months ago I dedcided that i was done with the doctors. I am still in constant pain. I spot all the time and have leaked through clothes numerous tmes. My scalp is so dry that Ive cut my hair and my face looks so bad i hate to look people in the eye when i speak to them. I cant control my emotions or my temper and i can sleep for 12 hours straight and when i wake up im ready for a nap. Im so scared that this mirena is causing bigger problems but im too scared to go back to the docotrs. The way they look at me and speak to me just breaks me down and makes me feel like its not even worth. If iI could I would spend all my time warning other females about the negative side effect of mirena so that no other female would have to go throught this.

Thank goodness for you bolg, I realise now i'm not going mad and I want this Mirena out, its the worst thing I've ever done, my family is feeling the effects too, two little girls and a husband who feels neglected bless him. I feel like I'm a walking mess a shaddow of former self. Some it works for, some it just doesn't!

Here is some hope for everyone. I had mirena the full 5 years and suffered from chronic bv, foul discharge, and weight gain. I gained about 40 lbs over the 5 years and could not lose a pound. One month post removal and I'm down 19 pounds and no bv or foul discharge. Maybe since it was in for 5 years, the hormones were at a low enough level that I didn't suffer the mirena crash or bleed for weeks. I bled lightly for a few days and now, a month later, have a more normal period. I'm overjoyed that thing is out of me and I have my body back!

I got Mirena in April 2008 after the birth of my 2nd child. I am in awe by reading these posts! My side effects included extreme fatigue, bouts of depression, BV, irregular periods, weight gain. The most upsetting of course is the 23lb weight gain over the last 5yrs despite a healthy diet, and moderate exercise 2-3 times a week and very good genes..lol. I basically gained back the weight I had lost in the 6 weeks I had sans Mirena between giving birth and 6week checkup. I too must mention the irritating breakouts that occur almost daily on my face, chin, shoulders, chest or butt...they're on rotation! The only plus is they do clear pretty quickly. My periods, however, for the last 2yrs have sometimes lasted 3 weeks at a time, with occasional spotting after intercourse, .and just randomly..so I always have tampons on hand. Not to mention the BV (bacterial vaginosis) that I've had at least 4 times in 5 years. I just got this thing out finally and am on Microgestin. It's only day 3 and I've already got a heavy period when my last one just "ended" 2 weeks ago. Im hoping this alternative brings back normalcy...but I've read unfavorable reviews about the Microgestin as well. I'll check back in about a month for my post-Mirena story.

i have had the mirena in for almost a year now and it has been like a living hell! my dr insisted i had it to help with my endo. since i have had it i have bled every 4 days and have felt like i have a constant infection. i have also developed ovarian cysts and hemorrhoids. the hemorrhoids have got that bad that i have to go to the hospital ever 6 weeks to have them banded because they are blocking my bowel and i can no longer go to the toilet without taking laxitives 4 times a day. my moods are out of control too. i have gotten so bad with mood swings that i have contemplated killing myself on more than 5 occations. i no longer have a sex drive. when i do have sex with my husband it feels like im being repeatedly stabbed. afterwards my lower stomach feels like i have been kicked. i want to have this thing out of my body but my dr and family are constantly telling me to wait until it calms down. even though it has calmed my endo right down i have had so many other things go wrong with my body, i think i would rather have the endo!
i advise anybody that is considering having this 'thing' inside them please dont! its not worth the pain.

I am still feeling really stupid after reading all these women's complaints that I didn't realize earlier what was happening to me. In 2004 after my 5th child was born I decided to go with the Mirena. I at the time did 45 minutes of aerobics 6 days a week and enjoyed it. Had a non stop sex drive with my high school sweet heart/ husband. Kept up with my kids with ease and ate healthy most of the time. (after insertion)Slowly my complexion was getting rough.....breakouts,age spots darkened. My drive to exercise lessened. My belly started to protrude. I asked my Dr he said was age.Over the next several years I felt worse. Aches, pains, weight gain...sleeplessness. Had a second Mirena inserted after 6 years . All the time asking my Drs if it could be that....no they said.....exercise...diet.Get more rest. I finally was having 1 pinky finger swell and ridiculous amounts of water weight gain.(10 to 15 lbs in 2 weeks) They ran blood 10 times. Put me on water pills. Was nothing wrong yet I had neck pain, leg pain, back pain....jaw pain. No energy....a severe change of appearance from a good looking fit person to an overweight old looking person. NO sex drive. I at this point am in such pain I feel like I am 85 at 46. Still they say.....diet,exercise. I cant at this point it hurts to walk. I do exercise....I own a farm. I carry 50 lb bags of feed, clean cook, take care of 5 kids, a host of farm animals, muck, etc.All this I do with severe pain and still am fat , lethargic and feel like crap 90 percent of the time. The Drs say.....lose weight.I tell them I have tried.......nothing is working. Today I am calling my ob-gyn....scheduling an appointment to remove it. I just don't understand whyyyyyyyyy after asking both my Drs....the regular practitioner and ob-gyn for 9 years it takes me finding a website like this to realize what my problem is? TY for the site and if this works I will finally have my life back!! After 9 long years. Hi Ladies, I'm so glad we have internet these days to share info with each other. If not for this I might still have the Mirena inside of me...I started IUDs after my neurologist stated I shouldn't be on the regular birth control pills per increase in stroke risk with my migraines. I started paraguard IUD for a year but I bled so much and became depleted in iron. I had it replaced with Mirena.

For the first year it was great, the only thing was no sex drive and irregular bleeding. But it didn't increase migraines which was great. However, after the first year I started noticing more unusual symptoms in my body. Tingling in feet, legs, groin; increased anxiety, painful intercourse, darkened skin under nose (like a mustache) and dark spots, vaginal dryness and itching - I didn't even get regular discharge anymore, and in the last 6 months (after 2 years with it)-hot flashes that started minimally then increased in frequency to daily (10x/day) and would ruin my sleep, they would wake me up in the middle of the night. The hot flashes were the motivation to get it taken out. My period also completely went away, which is normal apparently w this IUD, but I hadn't used a tampon in over a year. It felt like I was in early menopause (I'm 34) and I was drying up like a raisin before even having kids.

In reading reviews from others w Mirena I went to a gyno. She said that those symptoms had nothing to do with Mirena but I still requested it taken out because I worried about what I had read and I wanted my body to heal before we have children. After pulling it out, she said she had to use the pediatric speculum because I was so tense down there which was why I had painful intercourse and suggested to see a physical therapist for pelvic floor exercises to relieve it. I did not do that. She had my thyroid tested to make sure the hot flashes weren't from that, and it came back normal.

It's been out for 2 months now and I'm no longer on any birth control. I'm happy to report that my hot flashes are completely gone! It took about a month. My anxiety greatly reduced; before I had to take anti-anxiety pills to achieve the same calm I have now. After they took it out, all the tension I had gotten used to in my uterus went away, it felt great! Sex is not as painful anymore, I believe the IUD was the reason I was so tense down there. It's something that's not meant to be there in the first place. My tingles are somewhat decreased now. Dryness is gone and I'm starting to have regular discharge again, but my period has not yet returned though. Hopefully in the next couple months it will return.

Either my doctor was misinformed or was paid to look the other way by Mirena. My Dr made me feel crazy that I was trusting info from other women w Mirena on the internet over her. And no where does it say my symptoms were characteristic of side effects of Mirena. It was great the first year but if it can cause that many side effects, never again for me.

Now I am worried about infertility due to Mirena, that would be just my luck. I read somewhere it says 90% of women get pregnant within 24 mos after removal. I hope it doesn't take that long, I will be happy if I even can get pregnant without complications at this point.

If you have it inserted now, even if you're not having bad side effects now, get it taken out. Don't wait for bad things to start. My symptoms were gradual and I was attributing them to other things. Had I known it was the Mirena, I would have never gotten it. You will be happier in the long run without it. Good luck ladies.

For the first 18 months I loved my mirena. No periods, no forgetting my contraception. But then I became weepy; weary; lost confidence, started sleeping badly, and gained weight, especially on the tummy, I looked 5 months pregnant! I was like this for a year. My doctor did lots of tests (thyroid, anaemia, diabetes, addison's disease, all negative) and finally suggested anti-depressants. Meanwhile I read this blog and went back to my doctor to take the Mirena out. It didn't hurt at all and now, six weeks later, so far I feel full of energy, I have lost some of the weight, just by being more active and optimistic... my skin has gone a bit dry, and my spots have vanished. my period has not returned yet... maybe it won't, I am 47. my youngest is 7. I felt like a hopeless mum to my kids when I was feeling so weary all the time. I feel great now.

Oh, thank you, thank you, thank you for this blog and these comments. I found this blog when I was awake at 3am, unable to sleep from pains in my abdomen, hip and left side that had been going for weeks, which the doctors could not explain. I became certain I had some form of cancer, because what else could cause such a tremendous amount of pain. I had had my Mirena in for two years before the pain began, and the doctors assured me it could not be causing such problems. But then I read all your posts, and I was no longer alone, my pain was no longer a mystery. You all helped me figure out what the doctors couldn't. I made an appointment and had the Mirena removed on Monday. It has been five days. The pain is gone. The headaches are gone. The fear and anxiety are gone. Gone! I cannot thank you enough for sharing your stories. Thank you for helping me get my life back.

Wow! I feel like a lightswitch has gone on for me. Why was this never told to me?! I thought I was just irritable/tired b/c of my job and kids. I've also had the terrible acne, itching, loss of sex drive. I am calling tomorrow to get this thing OUT! I don't know why I never put it all together....
Thanks ladies.

I had the Mirena inserted about 14 months ago in February 2011 when I was 36, about 1.5 years after I had my 2nd child. I needed BC, and opted for the Mirena instead of going back on the pill since I was all about not getting periods anymore. Insertion was a breeze. Maybe still breastfeeding helped, but I hardly had any spotting or flow for the first few weeks post-insertion, and then my periods went away completely within a couple months. For the first year or so, I had no complaints. I told people how much I loved it!

But about a year later, I started to notice some weird things going on:

~ I had gained about 25 pounds since insertion, but I do seem to do this annual fluctuation when I fall off the diet and exercise bandwagon during the summer and holidays, so I didn't suspect anything strange was going on. But, starting in January, I had been working out 5-6 hours/week and limiting my calories, and I just could not lose weight like I had in the past doing the same program.

~ My hair started falling out like it did when I was postpartum.

~ Sudden onset of nipple soreness. I still nurse my 2.5 year old, and hadn't had soreness since we had issues with his tongue-tie in the early months. But suddenly my nipples were sore to the touch, and nursing was very painful.

~ My hips became constantly sore and achy. I was attributing this to starting to incorporate jogging into my workouts, but the pain seemed more chronic than the exercise-induced pain that I would have expected as my hip muscles got used to jogging.

~ Fuzzy thinking and short-term memory loss. I thought I was losing my mind, so much so that I was getting freaked out about possibly having early symptoms of Alzheimer's. I also felt like I had ADD, and could not stay focused on things at work. I also found that after touch typing an email, I'd review it and see that I substituted words that didn't make sense, and typed lots of homonyms by mistake - this was beyond just typos. It's like by brain was just flaking out.

~ I thought I was crazy until I saw other people post this: phantom fetal movements! It only happened like 3 times within a week, but it really didn't feel like normal gas.

~ Periods of extreme fatigue that felt like the first trimester. I just wanted to sit on the couch and sleep.

~ Lots of gas and bloating

~ Shorter temper with my kids

~ Less able to recover from a night out drinking. I've always been able to hold my liquor (I've never gotten sick once!), but I swear that lately drinks have had a stronger impact on me, and for the first time in my life, I've had hangovers that lasted a full day afterward.

After complaining about various symptoms to my husband from time to time, one day he asked "are you pregnant?!" Then I realized just how many weird pregnancy-like things were going on, and started doing some online research. After finding sites like this, it was obvious that my Mirena was the culprit! I called my OB/GYN and had it removed the next day. She had my thyroid tested too, but it came back normal.

The removal was painless, and I swear I felt a little better the next day. My nipple and hip soreness subsided almost immediately, and I feel less bloated. I spotted a little the next day, and then had a little flow for just one day 4 days later. I'm hoping my mind clears and I stop losing hair soon. And I hope I'm finally able to make some progress with my exercise and diet program, although other posts I've read said that their bodies still held onto the weight for a while after removal.

I don't know what I'll do about birth control since I don't wish to have more kids, but I don't think I want to introduce any more hormones into my body. Maybe it's time for my husband to get the snip snip. I'm not relishing getting my period again, but at least it's my body functioning the way it's supposed to.

The moral of this story – if you feel weird, get rid of it!

Rozzie said...

The doctor insisted I try the merina in lieu of getting a historectomy. I told him Ive had issues with hormones in the past. Headaches etc etc.
I had the IUD in for 3 weeks, I could handle the spotting, but had constant cramping that never went away. After two weeks of depression, and anxiety, I had it removed. Im the most level headed woman there is. I never cry and with the Merina in I was a snivaling depressive. I wasn't willing to spend months to let it sort itself out. Im not willing to give up any of my life. The cure is worse than the problem it was supposed to be helping which was heavy periods. I read it all in the forums but gave it a try anyway, and my gut instinct was right, it's not for me. I also had two friends who have had it and love it, no issues. I think it's about knowing yourself and what is going to work. I had it out yesterday, gone is the cramping, spotting, and emotional BS. Im free, and going to find a different solution for my problems.

I had my mirena for almost 5yrs when I first had the mirena it was fine no prbls at all but as time went by I had started to develop several prbls: stomach pain, pain during intercourse and infection I gain about 15lbs while on it I also had very bad mood swings I just recently had the mirena remove and I can tell a complete difference in my body. I also had a prbl of smelling myself right before my cycle would come yes I still had a cycle every month I now have a cyst due to the mirena when it was removed I had no bleeding the first day but the next day I was bleeding so bad that I had to stay off my feet I finally stop bleeding like 8 days later. I will never get this again in my life this was the worse 4 1/2yrs of my life

I feel for all of you. I feel Mirena and horrible doctors stole a year of my life. During a partial termination as they call it I elected before the procedure to have Mirena. I have Von Willebrand's Disease and during tests at the hematology center the head nurse explained that patients with VWD had found it greatly improved their quality of life. I signed up.

Then depression...from the pregnancy no go? I was sure. No...it turned to suicidal thoughts. I gained weight, had many pains, lost sex drive, (oh and I got married during this mess), high blood pressure, all kind of pains and on and on. One day I did a check list of all the possible side effects and I had about 90% of them. Still my doctor wanted to test my thyroid and treat me for depression. WTF is all I can say.

To make my story short, I can't believe I was not given a list of all the side effects before it was put in, it's not like you can just take it out.

It almost killed me, I believe my career and relationship both suffered. My self-esteem definitely suffered because I gained weight, was bloated and the bond between husband and wife were strained.

How can they do this? I'm not letigious but this makes me angry. It's been almost 5 months since it was removed and I'm just beginning to feel normal.

GOT THE MIRENA INSERTED ON MAY OF 2010. I LOVED IT FOR THE PAST THREE YEARS. FREEDOM AND NO PERIOD! I HAVE HAD SIGNIFICANT WEEIGHT GAIN (40LBS) BUT I WAS EXTREMELY UNDER WEIGHT SO THE EXTRA POUNDS WERE WELCOMED. THAT IS UNTIL MY STOMACH STARTED GROWING AND I BEGAN LOOKING PREGNANT WHICH I HATE. ALSO, I HAVE PERIODS OF TIME WERE MY BREAST ARE REALLY SORE AND I FEEL CRAMPY, LIKE PREGNANCY SYMPTOMS BUT ALL TEST RESULTS ARE NEGATIVE. ALSO HAD ISSUES WITH ACNE BUT NOTHING MAJOR. ALL IN ALL ITS DONE ITS JOB OF HELPING ME NOT GET PREGNANT BUT SOME OF THE SIDE EFFECTS ARE NOT TOLD TO YOU BY THE DOCTOR AND THEY DO DENY IT WHEN YOU ASK IF ITS CAUSED BY THE IUD. WILL BE REMOVING IUD IN AUGUST TO START TTC.

Hi Ladies,
I had the Mirena inserted three months ago. I have had bad chest pains, funny leg pains, irregular heart beat. And now thecherry on top, I have a fever (only my face feels super warm, like my eye balls are actually cooking). Anyone had this on the Mirena?

I suffer health anxiety. Or, at least my doctor, a psychiatrist, my parents and my husband think I do. But I'm now convinced its my Mirena. Ive been trying to figure out this right iliac crest pain for weeks now. I dont even bother going to my GP anymore - she asks me about my stress levels. I suffer dizziness, headaches, sore muscles, joint pain, major GI issues, absent sex drive, weight gain that is impossible to lose even with exercise and healthy diet. I can barely stay awake. I'm moody, sad, foggy....I have had the Mirena in for four years (post baby) and I'm going to get it taken out STAT. Ill follow up here.

I am a current user of the mirena not by chose either. I have had it for almost 3yrs now. Two weeks after having the mirena put in the dr told me they were goin to have to remove it and reinsert a new one due to my body rejecting the first. I agreed to this. About a month later I was using the bathroom and felt something odd. It was the iud that my body had rejected once again but it was only a piece of it. I call the dr the next day and go to my appt and they told me it had broken into pieces and the pieces that are still inside are imbedded into me. I am shocked mad and livid all at the same time. The dr says he wants to do a biopsy do to having alot of cyst near my cervics, I agree. Dr said once they get those results back the will remove the remaining pieces of the iud. 2weeks later I get a call saying please come into the office asap. So I rush there to learn that I have cervical cancer and one of the cancers cells are sitting on top of the embedded pieces of this god forsaken thing. So with this being said they can't remove none of the embedded pieces. And now I still have these pieces in me and they have messed my whole life up. I have a period almost every week, I have constant migraines, I have gained 30lbs which I can't lose, I have a rash that breaks out on certain parts of my body that drives me insane. I would never encourage anyone to get the mirena and I am looking into legal action at this time as well against my dr and the manufacturers of the mirena. Because I never had anything like this happen til I had this put in. And with having 4 children they never caught no cancer cells til after I had the mirena and then they appear after I get the mirena. No something is wrong with this and now I have stage 2 cervical cancer.

I am so glad that I am not alone with these symptoms. I have had my mirena for a year and cannot wait to have it removed next week. I used to have a beautiful complexion, high sex drive (which my husband loved), logical sense of being, nice hair, and the list goes on. I never realized that the symptoms of my anger, anxiety, depression, hair loss, acne, and just general sense of not wanting to do anything came after i had my mirena inserted. My husband told me that he misses the girl that he met and fell in love with. I cannot blame him, i miss her too. However, it really hurts to hear such things. My emotions have just been a roller coaster. I explode at the littlest of things, i become angry and withdrawn easily. I just cannot wait to have my self back!

OMG!!!! This is exactly what I am going through. Also, add bleeding to the list. I was told I wouldn't have a period anymore but I still do......Painful ones!! I had the mirena inserted in Nov 2011.

To start off, I am using my (not so) smart phone and I apologize for the many typos. Reading these stories has literally brought me to tears. I have had the WORST symptoms with the Mirena. I have had mine in for a little over a year. Extremely sore, swollen breasts(a full cup size), high anxiety, feeling constantly hungry and never being able to eat more than a bite, severe depression, unprovoked aggression (I mean physically and verbally lashing out), fatigue, numbness/tingling in my upper legs, horrid cramps (which I NEVER had before), weight gain, and suddenly becoming so light headed that I faint. I also have the swollen belly (looking 4 months pregnant) and I can't sleep. I have always done well with small amounts of sleep, but this is extreme. Two days without sleep is nothing now. I have so much energy, but my body is obviously suffering from the lack of proper sleep. I know two other girls the have the mirena and they both have cysts constantly. One of them has cramps so bad she vomits and bawls hysterically from the pain. I want to be my old self. I want to enjoy my sons company. I want to sleep. I want to save the next generation from making the same mistake I did. This was not "the best solution". this did not make me feel "empowered". I hate this damned thing, what it's done to me, to my relationship with my sons father... I am so sorry anyone ever had to feel like this.

I got the IUD the end of March. I thought it was the best thing. I just had a baby and I did not want another child for a long time. Right after I got it I started getting lower back pain. The pain just got worse and worse. I went to see a dr, they checked the placement and said that the back pain was not linked and it was the way I was holding my daughter and to take ibuprofen everyday and use a heating pad. I did what the Dr asked and it did not help. I then went to see a chiropractor she said that my hip was out of place and that she would readjust it. I felt immiate pain relief except the pain then came right back within minutes. I am scheduling an appointment to get this taken out. My gut is telling me this all has to the do with the IUD and after reading all these posts I wouldnt doubt it. I will post again after I get it out this week and tell you how I am feeling in about a month.

I got Mirena in April of '12.

The only side effect I've experienced is with sexual desire. I am not really in the mood ever.

My periods are non-existant so I see that as a big plus!

Overall, I am glad I am on Mirena. I would recommend it to others but with the caveat of researching the side effects.

I had got the iud back in dec 2010 or jan 2011. My hair fell out. I had three surgery to get cyst off my ovaries. This past Thursday I had surgery to get my right ovary remove. I am depress now. My mother keeps telling me everything will be ok. I wish there was a support group. I don't know if I will ever have another child.

For the first year or so, I loved my Mirena. Then things started to get hinky. I went round and round with nasty side effects for about a year before I finally gave up and went to the doctor to have it removed. And he wouldn't do it. Said my state insurance wouldn't cover removing it unless another one was being put in! So I called around trying to find the cheapest cash price in town, but everyone said that I would have to come in for a consultation and pay the new patient visit fee, then schedule a SECOND appointment to have it removed. I finally got so desperate I gave up and pulled the damn thing out myself. And 3 years and another baby later, I haven't regretted it yet.

This is my testimony, this is the greatest spell caster on the internet, i stumbled on this email address dr.marnish@yahoo.com few days ago, so i emailed about my condition and how my lover left me how he was with another girl, He told me it would take 3days to get my ex back to me With dr.marnish's love spell, my ex called me 3 days after the work. He spoke to me nicely, asking me if we could try things out again. He broke up with the other girl and came back to me my lover and I rekindled and got back together. I am now the most lucky woman in the world because my lover pampers me with all his love, care and attention. dr.marnish was my last hope and after all the spell casters I tried before, he was my last chance, and he kept his promise! My lover told me such a touching worlds last week! that he loves me and will never live me again! I really feel I’m living again! Thanks dr.marnish for making all this possible dr.marnish is wonderful

I cannot explain how much this blog has hit home. Low sex drive, aches and malaise, horrible anxiety, quick-tempered...all since I had the Mirena put in. Also, just recently, my ANA tested positive and I have low vitamin D. Another woman here said the exact same thing! I'm so glad I saw this because the Mirena being removed is a simple fix vs potentially dealing with lupus.

thank you all the women who have given thier input-i got my mirena in 2007 after the birth of my second child, we had them back to back & i was sort-of pushed into it from fear of getting pregnant again, well, i just got back from planned parenthood & they can't find the freaking thing-i have an appointment with an ob in 2 days to do a sonogram & figure out how in the world to get this out of my body, my husband & i for the last 5 years have almost divorced due to my lack of sex drive, i have had none since my 2nd child was born & he always thought it was him! it's not-before the mirena we loved to be together. also, i run-when i can muster the energy, i run about 15-20 miles /week. i have been able to do this because both my kids are in school & i finally have time during the day but i have not lost a single pound in 9 months of running, so i went to my GP & he did a blood test & my thyroid was normal but my testosterone was next to nothing, i mentioned to him my next to nothing sex drive & he asked when i was due to have the mirena out, he said, some of my symtoms may be due to it, aftereading this blog, i now know he was right on the money-i have been a walking time bomb for the last 5 years, anything will set me off & i'm sad to see so many people with the same issues, but so thankfull to find some encouragement from this blog. i pray they don't have to cut me open to get it out, but @ this point, i don't care-i want it out! i will post again after my appointment to let you all know how & if they can get it out, costs, pain, etc:)

So glad I found this information. Very soon after having my Mirena implanted I began having menopause type symptoms. (headaches, mood swings, joint aches & pains, fatigue, mental fog & memory loss, depression... to name a few) Later I developed acne & hot flashes/night sweats while my moodiness & anxiety escalated. I also had unexplained breast lumps & leakage. I experienced fits of anger & even struck out physically violent a few times. I saw RED!!
I went to my GP, Internal Medicine DR, an ENT, an Endocrinologist, OB-Gyn, Hormone Specialist/Clinic, Acupuncturist... everyone was stumped. I would verbalize my symptoms to the Dr. & this glazed look would come over them. I've had a parathyroidectomy because my parathyroid wasn't regulating my calcium blood levels. IM Dr. said this was why I was feeling this way but almost a year later I still felt like crap or worse!
The Lord's hand took me to this blog & my eyes were opened! 3 days later I had it removed (no easy task finding someone on short notice). 1 week after removal (which was super quick & easy btw) I have lost 4 pounds & have more energy & my attitude has done a 180! Not everything has changed but it's improving. I've changed nothing but had the Mirena removed & I'm happier than I've been in years!
If you're still not convinced check YouTube. I searched both "Mirena Side Effects" & "Mirena Symptoms". I am so blessed to only have had the symptoms I had.
Best of luck to you! I'll be praying for everyone out there suffering with this hormonal nightmare.

3 months after Mirena removal... and SO happy. After reading this blog I had the IUD out early February 2013, it was quick and painless, and my constant spotting that I'd had for 2 years stopped for 2 months. Then I had a heavy period for 6 days. No pain, just lots of loss. Now back to no loss at all. I have changed shape, lost my round middle and tummy, although I wans't dieting. And to my husband's delight my libido has come back this week - BIG TIME! and we are giggling like teenagers making out when the kids aren't looking although we are both nearly 50! Really, try it. But make sure you find some other contraception (that's not hormonal.) good luck.

Me again I just posted a few minutes ago - I'm shocked at the crazy prices you pay in America for your health care. 150 to 200 dollars to take it out! It takes a 10 minute appointment. I paid 33 euros, and that covers all the doctor's costs and she makes a good living. So pleased it's out - I have less anxiety, sleep less, am more active, less hungry, more fun, fewer spots, am more shapely, having more sex and feel so relieved.

i posted the above, the OB was able to locate it after a sonogram, she got it out, i'm free, it cost about $200 for the sonogram & $100 for the removal, this was self pay with no insurance, she put me on the pill non stop for 3 months to help with the bleeding to come & to ease me back into normal life! i just am so thankfull it's out of my body & i hope i can find my normal life again:)

Within months of getting Mirena I began to have severe acne problems. Like many have stated, I never had perfect skin, but never had issues like this. Jawline, neck, back--areas where I had never broken out like this. I assumed my body was just adjusting but this never went away. I tried every acne treatment available including Proactive and prescription medications. Nothing worked. I started to have increased hair growth on my chin that made the breakouts worse. My nurse practitioner also insisted that the dose was so low that not enough hormones would go systemic to cause such a problem. I am also an RN and know better. No matter where a hormone is in your body, it is in your system--you can't "contain" it in the uterus. Any practitioner with rational intelligence would note that a problem that occurs in direct relation to a change such as an IUD insertion is most likely the result of that change. Feeling like an idiot, I believed her and let it go--so brainwashed I even got a second one because I didn't want to go back on the pill and I was about to change insurance that would have been through a faith-based hospital system that would not cover birth control. I panicked and opted to get something long-term while I still had other coverage. My problems continued to the point where a dermatologist wanted to put me on Accutane. This was too much for me and I finally broke down and had the 2nd IUD taken out. I now have noticeable scarring all over my cheeks and jawline that will require severe treatment to correct, if at all possible. I still get occasional break outs but NOTHING like I was experiencing on the IUD. No one can ever tell me that it was not the cause. Trust yourself, trust what you see and what you feel. No one knows your body better than you. I work with providers of all kinds--they are brainwashed by the pharmaceutical industry to believe their sales pitches. Your doctor is not always right.

Hi ladies.
I had mirena put in 8 months ago.
The insertion was hideous.....
Never felt pain like that in my life :(
Since then, I've gone up a dress size, and all moast up another one. I was 130lbs, now my weight fluctuates wildly between 143- to 149.8 lbs.
Some days my tummy is so bloated, I'm ashamed to go outside... As no clothes hide the huge protrusion that used to be my flat toned stomach.
I get a strange " butterfly" feeling in my lower throat, all moast like fear or panic.
I get it removed next week. Wish it was sooner.

Mirena....
Thank you for all your posts.
I had mirena put in 8 months ago. I was 133lbs at moast before hand. I now fluctuate wildly from between. 143- to 149.8 lbs! My once toned flat tummy is now a bloated disgusting sight, and I'm so ashamed I don't like going out in public.
I'm exhausted all the time, and I feel a " butterfly" sensation in my throat if I even slightly exert myself....
I have it removed next week.
Get it out !!!!

I am officially scared to death right now. Thanks everyone for sharing your story. Mine is far from over. I went to the doctor a few days ago to get birth control pills perscribed. I unfortunately had an abortion months before and wanted to make sure it didn't happen again. As the substitute doctor (mine was too busy) asked me questions about the surgery she asked if I was on birth control. I told her I tried the patch and hated it. Too much hormones, heavy periods, and awful cramps. I told her I was on the pill and I liked it. She asked if I forgot to take it sometimes and I told her yes. She was about to tell me about the iud and I told her I had wanted It but my doctor was too busy to refer me to planned parenthood. She told me that the iud was better since you didn't have to remember it and that she could put it in that day. I agreed because uhm hello? Not having to remember to take a pill everyday? Yes please. However she didnt mention all of these side effects im seeing right now on this site. The insertion was terrible. The things (2) that open the cervix and the thing that makes sure its open enough hurt like HELL! I was sweating twitching lifting off the table and I had to breathe like I was giving birth. Then once it was all over and she was putting mirena in...it popped out! She said it was because of the surgery but that was like 6 months ago! But shes the doctor so shes probably right. Then they put in a new one and I heard them say they could save the bloody mirena or something (I bled is that normal? I had just finished my period) I had cramps afterward but nothing too bad. Then she called and said I needed an ultrasound to make sure it was put in right. I have to go to urgent care now because I cant miss work! I shouldn't have let her talk me into it. Ladies if you want the pill...take it! I cant have sex because im bleeding! I just finished my period damn it! Other than that ill keep y'all posted. (Im 19 btw ) Trying to grow my hair long and clear up my face. If its not put in right...im taking it out and going back to pills -___-"

Has anyone had vertigo type feelings? I have had my eyes checked, hearing checked, balance tests, blood work, tested for diabetes, pelvic ultrasound, EKGs and the next step is a neurologist. But when I try to trace these feelings back.. it started shortly after I had the Mirena inserted for the 1st time. I never thought that these symptoms could stem from Mirena and the only way I will know for sure is if I ever get it removed. I had my first one removed after 5 years, my period came back normally and if I remember correctly, vertigo symptoms went away. Got the new one inserted, shortly after vertigo symptoms returned. I made such a big deal about having it put back in because I could not remember to take the pill that now I will feel silly talking about having it removed because I think it's contributing to my dizziness....But in my GUT I feel like I need to have it taken out...

Holy moly, I have had so many of these side affects.. but I have been experiencing another side affect and im wondering if any of you ladies have experienced it. First of all my hair is getting darker on my body especially on my face, i have always had a tiny bit of peach hair around my lips but since the mirena my hair has turned darker and i have resorted to bleaching it.. again still not that big of a deal I can deal with this considering every other birth control doesn't work for me. I also get really bad acne and used to have some pretty damn perfect skin and only broke out when i was on my period but I decided to just accept it and get some acne medication but shortly after that about 6 months of being on the mirena i started getting cysts in my armpits that i thought were ingrown hairs but i recently got a really bad ingrown hair on my face that quickly turned into what we think is a spider bite and in two days this cyst blew up and became extremely infected and im on antibiotics and am hopeful that this wont scar like the terrible acne i have been getting since i got on the mirena. I am now wondering if these cysts are just a bad case of acne that everyone is describing.. I am making an appointment to get rid of my IUD tomorrow since i need to see my doctor anyways. Im so glad to read all this information and i wish I would have researched this before I got it inserted.. I hope the Mirena is dicontinued this is a very dangerous birth control and I won't waste any time getting rid of it!
good luck everyone!

I've just had mine removed. Didn't hurt like having it fitted at least.

Checking me for thyroid problems.....
Hmmmm... Where have I heard this before. ???

I have just had my second mirena IUD removed after refusing to leave the hospital on Monday until it was taken out of me.

I have been through 18 months of hell and in the end thought I was going to die because I couldn't work out what was wrong with me and I was over being treated like someone who had all of a sudden created Munchhausen Syndrome. At 44 years of age I have better things to do with my life than fill doctor's bank accounts whilst my life has ended up completely and utterly destroyed.

To the very few women who praise the IUD all I can say is up until last week, when I figured out for myself it had to be the IUD as after having sex with my boyfriend the next day I could not walk, I too would have praised the IUD even though I was to the point I thought I was going to die.

I am on my fourth day of having the thing removed and I already feel so much better. My feet are still burning of tap and when they aren't the back of my neck and shoulder's are.

I have had the Mirena in for 8 years and all I can say is who is going to pay for the past 8 years of my life. I lost my marriage, over the past 18 months my whole life is destroyed and someone needs to be held accountable.

I got a diagnosis on my discharge forms from hospital PID ? cause. 3 doctor's told me it had to come out and the 4th wanted to leave it in and send me home with it still in. Bull shit. I wasn't going anywhere until the thing was removed.
I have had all the symptoms and more due to this alien thing I thought was a godsend. Brain shaking, complete crippling body pain within 48 hours of CT scan and X-ray. I have bulging discs throughout my complete lumbar spine and I have a compression fracture at L1 with no explanation. I have also ended up on the floor rocking on all fours feeling like the worst labor of all time. It was worse than labor, it didn't stop. My teeth have all broken off in the last 12 months. I ended up in emergency telling them I have pus oozing out of my toes. I also have ulcers on the soles of my feet, they sweat constantly. I did not suffer from acne. Now just because I didn't show them on the outside of my skin does not mean to say they are not growing internally. So to all those women who so far feel like it is the best thing ever, please rethink what you are thinking. It will hit you hard and fast when your body decides to try and dispose of it. If you're willing to take the long term chance please as soon as you feel you are going crazy get it out.

I was told by one doctor that the Mirena actually grabs hold of infection and pushes it up inside deeper.

I had what I can only describe as the taste of death coming out of my mouth, the smell of death coming out of my nose and the smell of rotting flesh coming out from between my legs.

I was diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder and ADHD. What a major misdiagnosis that was. I was prescribed dexamphetamine and valium. It worked for about 3 months.

It's definitely time for this thing to be removed from the market and all forms of birth control need a lot more public awareness of their side effects.

I'VE had SEVERE FATIGUE TOO I have no desire to be active or have sex. Did this change for you once you had it taken out? I'm hopeful

I'm on day 9 of removal today and I still feel really fatigued all the time. I am fine when I lay down but as soon as I get up and walk around I begin to get dizzy. I am hopeful that things will get better more and more each day. My feet are still burning off tap and I have no desire to have sex what-so-ever. I have phobia's now to deal with I have never had before due to trying to figure out what was wrong with me myself and being told I am crazy and it's all in my head. I cry constantly, I never thought anyone could cry non-stop. I feel like I've had a baby, without the baby.

I beg anyone reading this site to please run to the doctor and have the device removed and spread the word. I am sick and tired of being sick and being told there is nothing wrong with me. I ended up locked in a psychiatric ward last September under a major misdiagnosis of psychosis. All my depression issues I can relate back to even having the copper IUD inserted so anyone who is trying this option remember it is copper and not meant for the human body.

I'm sorry to all of those women out there who are looking for some form of reliable birth control. Seriously, any form of birth control is not good for the human body.

People should not question why there are so many more emotional men amongst society today compared to 50 years ago and so called insane women.

I believe birth control itself is responsible for a lot of the problems society is faced with today. It can only now start showing the true effects of what it all about nowadays.

We can all live with the hope we will get our bodies and minds back without any long term damage, but I doubt it. Either way they can keep their birth control and mental health medication for themselves.

I honestly want to meet the idiots who allowed this thing on the market knowing its true effects. I believe they need to be charged with attempted murder along with having to pay for our lost lives because of their choice to treat us like idiots.

I have had my mirena for two years to help with heavy bleeding. It started out ok but after about a year the mood swings started along with horrible hair loss that is horrifying! I am a hairdresser and completely embarrassed by the visible hair loss. I lose tons of hair in the shower every day. Thats just the start of symptoms. I have gained so much weight for no reason and look swollen all the time my 16 yr old daughter said I look like the sta puft marshmallow man. My feet are painfully swollen all the time as well as my hands. I have had dizziness, headaches, cystic acne I never even had as a teenager, terrible mood swings, depression, no motivation to do anything, spotting and yeast infections constantly. I am tired of not wanting to do anything ever which is not like me at all. I have an appt to take this horrible thing out on Tuesday and can't wait!

Oh my! I just want to say that I'm happy for you. I had Mirena inserted last year in July I notice in October that I was getting anxiety bad, I went with the doctor and she gave me ipills, I started getting acne too which I never had even if I have two kids I never did now I get pimples in the side of my head is disgusting. And I hit my son too Everytime he cries, it drives me crazy, something I don't wish to do I love my kids but my behavior has become agressive. I told my husband about the side effects but he didn't believe me. I just want for this to end, there's days where Im just thinking negative thoughts, I want to be myself.

I will have my mirena for 5 yrs in january. I absolulty hate this thing!! When I got it back in Jan or 09, I thought I would be in heaven, boy was I wrong. I really thought I was crazy/wrong for all the things I have been through. I have gone in 3 times to have it removed, but each time each doctor will tell me no because i do not want anymore children(i have a almost 5 yr old) but not old enough to have my tubes tied yet(im 22). One doctor even put me on a pill ALSO to see if that would help. At my last appt, in May for it we found out that the strings are rubbing my cervix raw! I have had countless(literally can not tell you how many its been so many) UTI and yeast infections with it. I have experianced EVERY SINGLE THING you guys have described.

1- I have NO energy what so ever. No matter how much sleep I get or what I've done through the day.
2-I am so moody and me and my husband fight about it because I will get mad/depressed over nothing.
3-I can pull out handfulls of hair all day with no issue. Its really bad when I am in the shower.
4-I've NEVER had acne/bad skin. As soon as I got the mirena, my face is always breaking out and nothing clears it.
5-I have my periods 2 weeks out of the month!!! It is miserable. They range from really light or super heavy where its clots(tmi sorry)
6-the struggle with my weight has been terrible! NOTHING I do helps lose it either. I work out 3-5 times a week, eat healthy and nothing. I just continue to gain weight!
7-SEX....it kills me. My legs go numb and have a shooting pain through my stomach...its miserable but do it for my husband :( I rarely want it and when I do, I'm so tired I don't even wanna try.

I was just going to suck it up and wait until Jan to get it removed for good, but with all these stories I am calling tomorrow to make an appt! I want the old me back and my family/friends deserve that too!!

Thank you for showing me I am not the only one!!!!!!!!

So sorry you all have had such bad reactions to the Mirena. I just had mine removed a week ago after five years and had another put in. I absolutely love it. I did have bleeding the day of insertion and some cramping for a couple days that was it. I haven't had a period in five years and I'm looking forward to continuing that. Having it removed didn't hurt at all. Insertion was just as uncomfortable as the first time I had it done. I do feel bloated in the stomach but that's to be expected. My weight goes up and down all the time so that's nothing new either. I've not experienced any depression or acne or infections. I guess I would be the role model for the positive side of the mirena. I love it and have recommended it to friends and family. Sometimes during sex it does hurt but only when my husband hits my cervix, and that's cause he's very large down there. I love sex and have not lost that drive at all. I'm almost 39 and have 2 kids. My doctor said I can continue with mirena until about she 50 when menopause should kick in. I have had no regrets in my decision to continue mirena. I am very very happy with it. Please don't let all these negative comments keep you from considering mirena as a bc method. Every ones body will react differently, no one is alike.

I've also suffered the same symptoms as most of you ... extreme mood swings, depression, weight gain etc. My doc was very much against removing it and told me that if I was picking up weight it was because I was eating too much. I refuse to have to beg for it to come out, so I did some research to see how hard it was to remove it myself. I Googled and found a whole lot of women who removed their mirena themselves. After steeling myself, I followed their instructions and .... within 3 seconds of starting, I was holding the mirena in the palm of my hand!!! I am not brave and was terrified to do it, but I refused to bow down to doctors who refuse your wishes. Try it ... Google and you will see!

Hey guys, so I just got my mirena removed yesterday. I was very confused about my situation because I had my mirena for 4 years. I know only one year to go!! Let me start by saying that I am 24, I got my mirena when I was 20, I've never been pregnant, and I've been with the same man since I got my mirena. So, the problem... The first 2 years I had no problems, none, I loved my mirena. I didn't have to think about it and I was being safe. The only annoying thing was very irregular periods. Then... After 2 years I started getting itchy, started having foul smelling discharge i figured yest infection so i got oc medicine and it helped then i got another one soon after the medication wore off. so i began researching how to control it and followed the steps. it was okay and just wrote it off, assuming something else was going on. about a year later i had pain in my lower abdomin, and it never went away. so I went to my doc, she said I have classic signs of a yeast infection so she gave me a pill and my yeast infection left!... For about 2 weeks. All this time, when I didn't have signs of an infection, my now husband and I would have sex and after we did, the next day my poor hubby would get a rash on his penis, fortunately this went away in a few days and nothing else would happen to him. We assumed he might be allergic to the hormones of the mirena. But found it odd that he was never affected before. My doc said that his rash couldn't be caused by the mirena or yeast infections. And that maybe he's got an std and we are passing it back and forth. But I know my husband, and I had just gotten an std test with no positives so I know it couldn't be that. I also noticed that i had yeast infections without symptoms so i had it consistantly and didnt even know! and my husband was suffering for it!! We began our research we found out that his rash was caused by my yeast infections. Also by reading this blog realized that my mirena was the culprit for my yeast infections. I also was very moody, feeling depressed some days, getting bad acne on my face, chest, and back. So I made an appointment to get m mirena removed. Like I said that was yesterday and I already feel a million times better. The discharge that I've had for more than a year is gone!! I got the depo shot right after my removal so I need to be careful with my husband for about a week, which means condoms so we will see how it goes with his rash. I wanted to add also that when my husband and I used condoms, he didn't get a rash. Keeping my fingers crossed!! I hope this helps you gals who have concerns about mirena. It's not for everyone, my boss has mirena and she's got no issues, lucky her! Just remember, you know your body! If things are happening that you feel are wrong. Do something about it, don't wait like me you could hurt your partner also. Good luck ladies!

Hi,
I'm 20 years of age and have no children.
I got the iud inserted in may 2013, very painless insertion as my doctor provided a local anesthetic into my cervix before insertion of the mirena. My doctor told me that I would be fine to have sex whenever I felt I was okay to so that was 3 days after insertion, about 10 days after insertion I woke up and 3am busting to go to the toilet once I got back into bed I was in severe pain I couldn't lay still I couldnt get back to sleep so I woke my mum up who heated up a heat pack for me and rang nurse on call they told me to go to the hospital which I did they gave me an emergency ultrasound to make sure my iud was in the correct place and pain killers, it started getting better after 5 days in horrendous pain. The last 4 weeks I've been very bloated to the point I actually look pregnant and feel really uncomfortable, I'm losing a brown mucus when I go to the toilet and sometimes when I go to wee it feels like I havent got it all out but something's blocking it from coming (best way to explain it) I'm losing clumps of hair everytime I wash my hair and am starting to have cramps in my lower abdomen. I've also been feeling really sick and lethargic and have experienced cramping in the bottom of my feet and pins and needles in my feet and hands nearly everyday. I don't know if this is all to do with the iud but it's all happening at the same time. If anyone has any information please help me. As I'm going to make an appointment to have it removed but I know my doctor is going to question me. Thanks

I am so grateful for all of these reviews. I have had Mirena in for 1 year now and I havent felt like myself since then. I am always soo tired. I can sleep 10 hours a day and still feel exhausted. If I clean the house I have to take breaks in between because I am so exhausted. I have had really bad mood swings (I have never had mood swings before) and my kids get the brunt of it. I had 3 kids in 3 and half years, so its always been a little difficult to deal with, but today I actually told my son I was going to drowned him in the bathtub if he didnt stop whining (seriously?!). Sex, what sex I could care less if I ever have sex again. I was never that way. My arms and legs are always really heavy and tired and I have started to get huge nasty bruises on my legs. Even my feet are swelling. Ive know something wasnt right, but I love the convenience of Mirena. I cant deal with these side effects anymore and neither can/should my family. I am calling tomorrow to remove this thing!
